yeah so I got American pride. so is there any way a /6 can beat a non stock jap. car. both off the line and in a race? is the /6 capable of being a race engine? |

My Valaint is almost as fast as my GFs Talon TSI AWD.....and that is pretty quick.... The Valaint will give you a better smokeshow everytime. The Talon is quiet and civilised. My Valaint holds 5 people and their snowboards and daypacks...the Talon holds 2 people and their snowboards and daypacks....and a Latte' It took $1200 and 4 days to fix the Valaint after I punted an elk out of Kootenay National park on the way home from a snowboard race.(65MPH) It will take $1800 to take the minor deer dent out of the side of the Talon,,,and about 2 weeks. The guys who park the cars at the ski hill wave the Valaint to " le place de honouur" at the front of the lot....the Talon gets parked between 2 Tahoes. ......how fast do you and your buddies want to be on the slope on a powder day?

Yes- but can you run a stock ready for the junkyard slant car up against the latest Rice Rocket Creation? Of course not- but if you are willing to do a little work ala slantzilla and Sandy in B.C. yeah- they are the experts. |

not an expert....BUT... I can see that 3.7 litres in a 2800lb car has potential.... The trick is to coax the potential into applied torque... |

The reality is that about 85% of the ricer cars are just plain pigs. It's that other 15% ya gotta worry abouts.  I don't even bother with ricers. I go hunting rats, snakes, elephunts.........................................................................and Possums

I raced a Lexus 3.5 TL in my 64 Dart when I just hooked up the new head and exhaust and blew his doors off. The trick is to coax the potential into applied torque... My car was very light at the time since it had no interior etc.

I was out at the test and tune this week with the Aspen. I wouldn't let my self get roped into racing rice. I also didn't go talking $#!+ to the guys in the big block powered american muscle cars. In exchange, I got plenty of thumbs ups and the preverbial 'my uncle had an indestructable slant six' stories that make everyone smile. I pull out the slant six racing news and show them a couple of pics of cars and the records they have set. My motor is mostly stock parts with a little bit of head work and a super six intake. We ran a best of 18.446 in the 1/4 mile.   I saw a couple little rice boxes with turbos that would run in the 13's.  I can't say I hate all people who drive rice, I even saw a guy with a home made turbo setup on a 1.3l engine that was running in the mid 15's! I got to give the kid credit for his hard work instead of him sitting around drinking or smoking crack like lots of kids. In order to match rice speeds, I'll need new rear end gears, and a racing torque converter to start. (figure I'll be low 17's by then) To get to the next level, I'd need to either performance build a high compression engine with lots of cam and a bigger intake, or custom build EFI and turbo charge a regular engine. (seems like guys can get sub 15's either approach, but I'd really like to try the EFI/Turbo combo some day) I think you could actually still drive cars at this level and not have great concerns about how to get home. For faster yet, you can spray some NOS or add even more boost.(depending on your engine build) The fastest street cars are in the hight 11's, but they arn't the kind of thing you'd drive around in very much, and usually they are stripped down to the bare essentials for weight reduction. Gearing is also pretty impractical for sustained highway speeds. In short, I wouldn't consider racing a modified ricer to a 1/4 mile contest for a long time. If the challenge was who has a cooler ride and a smoken' burnout, I'm in! Final factor is that my car has already had 25 years of use and has a total cost under $2000 to construct and race for the last 3 years. Got me home from clay city even with a rod knock, and got me runner up honors in columbus last year. (I won $350) Gotta love my six. |

My 72 swinger is stock except for a 2bbl and intake that I havent quite sorted out yet. It still gets me to work everyday though. In fact , Ive been trying to get this car sorted out for the last 7 years and 70,000 miles. It may not be fast, but I can't think of too many late model cars, domestic or import, that one could drive that many years and that many miles with an ongoing mechanical problem! (I have never been able to get the carb working quite right) When it comes to all these slick late model sports cars, my motto is, "You can leave me at the stop light, but eventually I'll pass you at the junkyard." One way I look at life is being like one endless endurance event. How many cars have come....and gone......since my Swinger rolled out of the factory? The only major mechanical component that is not original is the carb. Nothing else has been rebuilt or otherwise molested. It would be fun to build up my slant 6 one day, but for now, I need it to go to work. I probably won't mess with it untill it just stops running, which might be never. The main reason I love my slant 6 is that its very nearly impossible to kill, and if well cared for, is very nearly immortal. Makes a lot of other people look silly. You know, blowing their money on one car after another (or one engine after another), while my money just keeps piling up in the bank. |
