Post subject:  Going to...Lambo Doors!

Ok, I ve had a loooooot of freetime in traffic while looking for a job, so I designed my system for lambo doors, but the only thing that still makes me doub it the shock, will a common hood shock will do the work?

How much weight a hood shock take, and how much weights a door from a ´71 Duster? I was thinking (again) to use hood shocks from a ´01 Concorde, what do you think people? I need some help here.

There is no way one hood shock could open a duster door. You should go post this question over on www.vannin.com Those guys take van doors and make them open like gull wings. THey can tell you all about hydraulics and air pumps and the fiberglass doors necessary to make things like lambo and gull wing doors work.

Personally, I think it is a bad idea.

About the max lift (to my knowledge) you can get on a hood/trunk lift is 100 lbs. And that's supported weight; there's no way it would lift it for you.

i know of an integra with similar "lambo" type door hinges on it. the guy is thinking of removing the system since in his opinion they are much more trouble than they are worth. i guess the setup is very sensitive to any sort of misalignment and tend to jam or not latch properly. he said his car has some super-duty gas charged shocks that run about $150 for each door, plus the hinges add a bunch of extra weight. style is a matter of personal taste. not my thing but hey if you really want to do it i say go for it.

Well, I only need the shock to keep the door up without falling, also I was thinking in using two shocks per door, I got something like 4 o 5 hood shoocks over here.

But why it would be a bad idea?, also I´m making a new dash panel with some wood.

But why it would be a bad idea?
(1) It would take extensive body modifications to make the door open properly. It would have to somehow open in a manner that kicked the back of the door out to clear the body

(2) It would be very difficult to maintain a proper weatherstripping seal.

(3) It would be very expensive

(4) It would require more maintenance and repairs would be more difficult

IN the end it is your car to do with as you will, but if you want the car to be a daily driver I wouldn't recommend doing something this drastic. All cars I have ever seen that had Lambo doors were show cars not driven daily (including Lamborghinis [SP?]).

Ok, I designed my system to be easy to put (plug & play) without cutting, welding, bending or drilling any part, so I think point 1 is cleared,

2) It´s almost impossible to get weatherstrips for a Valiant here, so we need to modify other weatherstrips, so again, I think this point is clear.

3) Expensive.......kits cost from 700 to 1,300 dollars here, mine would cost 150 dollars.

4) Meaby would be difficult to give maintenance, but it will be fun, also I can always use lubricant in spray to reach the hinges.

So two hood shocks can make the job to keep the door up without falling and meaby help to raise it? Later I will put my schematics of my system.

Poor Dennis, wrong generation... ;) You ever seen a lamborghini (sp?) and how its doors open? Instead of swinging out like a normal door, they pop out parallel to the car, then swing up towards the sky.

Once the door rides in the "up down position" not in the swing out position I think your car will probably "sag" in the middle and jamb the doors...Remember your car is a uni-body, and you have to crawl under there and gusset and weld the sub-framing together like the handler/drag crowd does to get the body to stay "straight".

good luck,

Here is a Dart I spotted at the Mopar Atlantic Nationals last week:

Sorry... I didn't get any pictures of how they installed the door mechanism.

Yeah, I used to have a Lamborghini, a Countach. I just called 'em "doors". Had trouble getting my fat @$$ in and out, too. Why would anybody want a Duster door to do like that?
