On the distributor side. Does it matter which wire is hooked to which on the distributor plug?

Yes. If you get it wrong, the engine will be hard to start and will run poorly.

Will the length of the wiring to the distributor effect its performance? I mounted my HEI unit under the dash and the wiring to the distributor is close to 4 feet long.....

H'mmm...no, there shouldn't be any measurable effect on performance, but why'd you mount the HEI unit under the dash, of all places, instead of someplace close to the distributor, like on the inner fenderwell?
