I just put in a rebuilt ps box and there is still tones of play. I would ahve left it but my dad is using the car and was complaining about the stearing. I put in PS using a 70's crysler pump (not saginaw) and an early gearbox that I got from Doug. When I came to replace it I got confused as i had a gearbox from a swinger years ago (I completely forgot about the pitman arm diametar thing!) Before I got the right box for my 63 valiant I got one for a 76 dart brand knew rebuilt and there was no play at all in that box. unfortunately I dont have the right k frame for that set up, and I didnt want to re taper my center link, althought it was tempting.

so my question is:

can the early model sector shaft be put into the later model stearing gearbox? would this remove the slop between the reaction rings? has anyone tried this?

I bet dan and doug have answers to this one.....

thanks everyone

Richard

You might, but that would be a pain in the @$$. Have you tried just adjusting out the play? Also, if you take the head off of the input shaft end of the box, there is an adjustment there for worm preload as well (staked nut). I take it you're already familiar with the cross-shaft adjustment.

the box is brand new rebuilt, so I was assuming that they are all like that. I tried to adjust the old one before I replaced it.

Meaning what? Where'd it come from? Parts store...?

Well, they're not! :-)

Both adjustments, or just the top one? Did you do the adjustment(s) correctly? ...are ya sure?

i looked in the haynes book, and there was no adjustment proceedure for the rise and fall in the "input" or "screw" or whatever its name is. I am not completely familiar with the nomenclature. I know there is a massive ring nut and that it might be adjustable, and that before I put the orriginal power box in i tried to take some slop out, i loosened the lock not but could not get the other part to move.

The one I got was a rebuild from monument car parts, i think it was in a delco box, but i have no idea who did the actual physical rebuild, but apparently it was somewhere in LA. the later model box had zero slop in the input shaft.

The box that came out, i got that from Dutra, he said it was probably due a rebuild and that there was a place who did custom rebuilds to make it with less play and less assistance, but I forgot who it was, and at the time I did the replacement there was pressure to just get it done.

If you can hip me to an adjustment proceedure for removing the the slop in the input shaft to a stearing box, I will surely proceed it hte next time I am with teh valient! thanks for your help! (is this the part where I get yelled at for not checking the archives?) as far as adjusting the sector shaft, there was no slop or rise and fall in that. thats the little lock ring and screw driver adjustment in above the sector shaft right? I have done that before and I am pretty competant wiht that one. I can also adjsut the centering of of the power assist, but it did freak me out the very first time and it ripped the wheel out of my hands when I turned the car on... but I do know how to do it.

but back to my orriginal question.... are the sector shafts intechangable? now I am just plain curious......

The ring nut holds the adjustor. The ring nut itself is not an adjustment.

Hammer and punch. This is not something that should just be guessed at, it really should be done properly (or at least reasonably so). See Here and Here.

Thanks. it was firm feel that doug was talking about. I was reminded as I was reading the uca thread. I know the lock nut does no adjusting but the think it locked did not budge and as I was pounding hte $#!+ out of it it occured to me that perhaps, just perhaps, it was at its end already. having spent about $300 on this, i am not in a hurry to get the FFI box, but i may feel diferently in a year or so.

thanks again dan. you are a guru.

A parts store reman is a crap shoot. Most are done by a1 cardone who has standards slightly lower than a two dollar hooker.

For my 74 i used a low mileage m body unit. It helped but I still want something better.
