Has anybody used these mini starters built by Mopar Performance or another manufacturer (for instance, like the one at JEG'S, PN 312-P5249644AB) for their Slant Six?

Any comments?

The least-costly way to get one of these starters is to grab it off an '89-'01 Dodge truck or van with 3.9-litre V6, 5.2 or 5.9-litre V8. The MP starter is just the production late-model starter. Don't go later than '01 or you'll get the "noseless" starter; that'll cause problems with pre-'01 applications that need a starter with a nose. Don't mess with any of the aftermarket "racing" starters; they're just grossly overpriced rebox-jobs of the same Nippondenso starter Chrysler put on the vehicles listed above. And be especially careful not to be tempted by the "100% new!" starters at the parts store or the "new" mini starters on eBay; they're cruddy Chinese copycats.

goto your parts store and ask for a starter for a 1991 Dodge D150(2wd) with a 318 and automatic. You will get a ministarter that will bolt right in and be a whole lot cheaper. Its the same thing as the MP ones and with the parts store ones you get a warrenty.

BTW a nice guy would just eat the "core" cost...a not so nice guy would bring back his old style starter a week later to fool the counter guys

Not so nice guys like that are the ones that help make the core costs outrageous... If nothing else, go grab a junkyard starter (of the correct type) to use as the core; you'll still come out money ahead.

These starters are actually very durable. I've bought all mine used at wrecking yards for $50 each and have not had a single failure. The thing that goes first is the internal solenoid contacts. If you can replace those you're in good shape.

Another thumbs up for this starter. I got one for $20 out of a wrecked '97 Ram van about a year ago,put it on my Ramcharger and it worked well. Now I just need to scrounge up two more, one for our Dart and another for my D100.
