how tricky is it to instal a tach from like napa or autozone? also, how does it work? in the package i could only see wires, thanks! |

buy it and just follow the directions, i bought mine from Kragens for $25. works good as far as i can tell. |

Its not tricky at all. Usually you will have a black wire, a white wire, and a green wire. The white wire goes to the dash illumination circuit, the black wire is grounded, and the green wire goes to the (-) terminal on your coil. Get a big hoseclamp (or two medium sized ones) and clamp the base of the tach to your steering column and drive! Many aftermarket tachs have a switch on the back to select between 4, 6, or 8 cylinders. Just make sure yours is set for 6 cylinders before you finish installing it. |

There is also a red wire that goes to a switched power source. To make it easier, I twist the red and white together. The light will be on any time the ignition is on but it eliminates one more connection. I also twist the white wires on my aftermarket oil and water gauges and connect them to the same power source as my tach. I also use the #77 spades that install on one end of a fuse in the fuse block. It beats using a scotch lock to tie into a lighted and switched power source. |

could i jut hook the white wire to a power source? or does it need to be the gauge circuit? i have no problem with switched power sources, i have a switch that controls the cd player and one that controls the fuel pump, either one of those are almost always on when im driving, the exception being when i forget the fuel pump, which, it reminds me soon enough

edit: edit: just reread cecils post, and i think the answer to my question is yes, i have a heavier gauge power wire straight from the battery with a inline fuse, splitting to the cd player switch, amp, and fuel pump switch, thanks everyone! |
