Ok I swapped in a 7.25 sure-grip rear from a 73 Duster which I would believe is the clutch type rear??? Either ways it was suppossed to have been a good unit but however now I suppose the sure grip unit is worn
out because it will only spin one wheel. Also I noticed that when I take it down the road the rear is howling- It has a new motive gear 3.55 ring and pinion in it so could the backlash be off or could it be bad carrier
bearings? Im just throwing a guess out here....I have new axle bearings,
and also a new pinion bearing as well. Im kinda stumped here so Im gonna ask this- Is there a source for rebuild parts for my sure grip unit?
And if worse comes to worse is a new 7.25 sure-grip unit available or a locker?? We also checked the gear oil level and it was fine. We used the
sure-grip additive as well. Any help is greatly appreciated!

The howling, could be any number of things, from bad bearings, to the wrong setup on the gear set. As for the sure grip, There are no new units available for the 7 1/4, unless you find someone with a NOS piece. There are clutch kits available, but it looks like the NOS dealers have grabbed most of them, and want big bucks. Frank Mitchel used to have some, and Collectors Auto Supply lists 22 in stock, at over $100 ea. I got lucky and bought one on E-bay last year for $19.99. The part number is 2404 427. That my help you to locate something.

Thanks Charrlie. Does anyone know when the clutch type was replaced with the cone type and are the two interchangeable between changing them out in the 7 1/4 rears???

I don't know what year, but it was the same as the 8 3/4 rears. I have a cone type on the shelf, it came from a 76 duster. The complete sure grip unit, cone or clutch, will interchange, regardless of the year of the housing.

Could you see any springs inside the SG unit? Springs = a cone style unit.

michael-
is this rear howling all the time or just around sharp corners? my first axle build song like a songbird from around 10 mph and up. i had set the pinion height wrong and once i reset everything the noise went away. as for your one wheel peel situation, the clutches may be glazed and not working properly. try driving in circles a bunch of times in both directions to clean them off. change the fluid with fresh stuff with friction modifier and you should be set.

Hmmm I'll have to try this James...Where can I get some of this friction modifier?? Local parts store?? The rear is howling about to what you describe..From about 10mph up it kinda sounds like a siren ,lol. I'll try this
and see what happens, This rear end has set out of car for a long time..
thanks

"Friction modifier" is the limited slip additive that you can get at most any parts store. They usually keep it next to the gear oil.

Not sure if this is of any use:

1969-1974 used the Borg Warner Spin Resistant (# 2881343). This unit

utilized a spring-preloaded cone friction arrangement for the locking

action. Axle end thrust is taken by the cross shaft. This Sure Grip

appeared in '489' assemblies and 70 and later '741'/'742' assemblies.

The differential axle bearings are:

LM 104912 (Timken cone), and LM 104949 (Timken cup), (Chrysler numbers

2852729 and 2852728). The Borg Warner Spin Resistant unit can be

recognized by its lack of bolts on the side opposite the ring gear

(like the Dana), and two openings exposing the preload springs.

Borg Warner sold this design to Auburn Gear who currently offers the

replacement Sure Grip assemblies.

Okay I got the unit working working- thanks for the tip James! Just changed the gear oil and sure grip lube today as well. The unit I have is a
cone style, are these rebuildable if they should fail?? I was unaware until
this post that there are 2 different types. Thanks- Michael  :D
