Post subject:  904 rebuild

I know that this subject has been discussed, but I didn't see anyone saying what kit they used from what company they got it from. I plan on using my 904 in a 1970 duster for daily use behind a turbo/FI 225. I'm looking to get a torque converter in the 2000-2100 rpm range. I want to rebuild the tranny and add a shift kit, I just want to know what would be a good all around kit that will have the parts I need. Currently the tranny works very well.

If it is not broke...
I would just put a higher stall converter and a shift kit into it and leave the rest alone.

In fact, stay focused on one project at a time. Engine need rebuilding, rebuild the engine and getting running again. Want to convert to EFI, do that as a seperate project, the same goes with the trans shift kit, that can be done later as a seperate "weekend project".

The high stall converter is one item you should plan ahead on, it needs to go in when either the engine or trans is out.

Don't let "project creep" sideline your car for weeks, months, years or forever.
Always go into a repair or up-grade job with a 'how fast can I get the car back on the road' mind-set.

The Doctor says: "Cars you work on and drive are fun, cars you work on, as they sit around not running, are not any fun."

Thanks for the input. I do plan on one thing at a time, like rebuilding the engine then put on FI, then the turbo. My concern with the tranny is 'will the tranny live easily and last behind the planed engine build?'. I'm asking for input on the tranny and motor build so I can get a idea of what I need to set aside (money wise) as I go.

The real 'trick' to building a strong SL6 904 trans is to grab a V8 version and to swap the better drums, clutch packs, bands and plantary gears into the SL6 case.

As for the rebuild parts and kits, they are all the same with the only exception being the availability of some higher quality clutch pack friction plates.
Summit or your local trans shop can get you all the parts.
