Yes and no. It will bolt up, with the correct pieces. Use an adapter bushing, in the end of the crankshaft, the flex plate from the 74 engine, and the torque converter from the 66 trans. The hole in the end of the crank got larger between 1967 and 1968, as did the register for the flex plate.

ok, so...what your saying is itd be easier to spend the 50 bucks on the 225 tranny thats with the 74 225, and keep the 170 tranny with the 170?

I wouldn't say, one is easier then the other, just another option. The adapter bushing can be made locally, or purchased from Pat Blaise, or Wildcat Mopars, for about $30.

The 74's valving has better part throttle kickdown ability which is nice.
On the downside, the later the trans, the softer the shifting seems to be. The shift "firmness" is something that can be adjusted by installing a shift kit.

One other note, the 74 engine's oil pan and pick-up tube will have to be swapped for the parts currently on the 66 if this combo is going into a 1966 chassis.

While the trans is out of the car, I would replace the front seal, change the filter, and clean the pan, at the very least. Also consider replaceing the shift shaft seal and rear seal.

wont the exhaust pipe at the manafold have to be addressed, since a 170 is an inch shorter then a 225? I thought I read this here somewhere?

if you can get the uncut wiring harness from the doner and all the "boxes" it is a good time for an electronic ignition upgrade. well not ALL the boxes, just the spark controll unit and the eletronic regulator and their wiring. search for the info, it is here somewhere.

i wish we could, but were buying the engine and trans from project74 here on the board. we pulled out the engine today, went pretty smoothly (alot easier than all my brothers hondas 8) ) tomarrow (well, later today, i guess) well be pulling the transmission. wish us luck!

Yes, there is a likelyhood that the exhaust system will be pulled up higher and bang on the floor with the "taller" 225, a little bending will usually resolve that issue.

Another "fast fix" for this problem is to get another exhaust flange from the muffler shop or off an old exhaust pipe. Use it as a spacer between the manifold and the exhaust pipe currently in the car. (you will need two gaskets and some longer bolts)
