Post subject:  Revised combustion chamber. Is it really a big deal.(68Later

I ve got a 67 head that I had planned on installing larger valves and port and polishing. The Hot Rod article Slant Sickness had described this. But I read another article by Doug Dutra about the revised combustion chamber heads made after 68. I ve called around looking for one with little success. Some have no spark plug tubes some do. The target range I though was between 68 -76 for this better quench / squash area head. Some of the salvage yards only have heads build around the mid 80s. Are these heads the same or is it just not worth the trouble of locating one for the little bit better performance?

All the 68and newer heads have the revised chambers.
The later 'peanut plug' heads are about 10 lbs. heaver and after 1980, had hydraulic valve gear, but they do have the revised chamber.

If you are not after every last bit of power, it is not a big difference to use the 60-67 'wedge chamber' head, they work just fine.

Will my 67 valve train fit on a 80s head?

Yep. The main difference will be the rear hold down bolt for the rocker shaft. The late head takes a stepped down bolt.

81 and up heads take a different valve cover too.

And you can't pull the lifters on the later heads without having to remove the head.
