I've got two slant six's right.....both are missing the retaining bolt for the balancer  . Does anyone know the thread pitch and bolt size? When I replaced my timing chain there was no way for me to turn my engine. Since then my timing has been giving me fits  .

The bolt isn't "missing". It was never there in the first place. You can install a bolt if you want one in that location, but it is not required. The vibration damper/crank pulley is an interference fit on the crank snout.

Yeah, quite a few times I've gone to stick a cheater on the bolt to put a fraction of a fraction of a turn on the engine. LOOK MA! NO BOLT :!:

I'm not convinced that was the best way for Chrysler to save 17 cents. I, too, would like to know the specs on that bolt. Altho I have no doubt you can buy them somewhere on the resto NOS market for probably no more than $79.

If the search engine phrase feature would work right you might be able to find out about it here in the archives. But digging thru 3847 messages in hopes of finding what you need?

I've used small block damper bolts with no issues in my 225s. FYI, A, LA, B/RB and G/RG engines are all tapped for the same thread bolt. Some engines used longer bolts than others.

It's a 3/4 x 16 threads per inch bolt. Same bolt fits big blocks.

The bolt is 2-1/4 x 3/4 x 16tpi. The washer is 1-15/16 x 1/4. A new bolt came with my compressor mounting kit from Classic Auto Air. It was a little longer though. I think about 1/2 to 3/4 longer. At least as long as the pulley was thick. They might just sell you the bolt. The whole mounting kit was $125.

Post subject:  Harmonic Balancer Bolt

My 1980 225 Slant Six (cast crank) had a much thicker harmonic balancer on it than my 1972 225 Slant Six (forged crank). The bolt that is in the 1972 SL6 is too long (I think it must have been replaced). Isn't there a thin damper bolt available?

Hi Dan and others

Will I need the same bolt size for my '66 Dart with the 170ci engine? i.e. 2-1/4 x 3/4 x 16TPI as you have mentioned?

Thanks

Syed

Summit got them, part number DCC-5249557AB,, $8.95 each.

I got some 4" bolts from this company on eBay. I made a bid for 4 bolts for 50 cent each and it was accepted immediately, cannot see that they are in stock right now.

I just go to the junkyard and steal a bolt out of the snout of a 318/360/5.2...the junkguy will usually wave you on for free or ask for
pop money....

Will this fit on my Slant Six?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HEMI-CRA ... _500wt_942

Based on the description above from you guys, the length should be 2.25" and the thread are all the same for Mopar engines, so this should fit right?

Cheers

Syed

Syed,

That should work fine. Note that you do not have to use the bolt. All my cars came without the bolt (HB just pressed on). I usually put one on now just so it's easier to spin the crank by hand with a wrench.

Happy building,

Lou
