Once upon a time I worked with a person in Texas on a 198 SL6 engine build-up.
As these types of projects seem to go... things took longer then ever expected but low and behold, he just Dynoed the engine and boy, it sure makes good power!

Here is a copy of the Dyno Results
On a separate dyno data page, it was good to see that the Dutra H-Pac manifold used had cylinder temps that were with-in 100 degrees, between all cylinders, that is great fuel mixture distribution for that manifold.

How did they get the VE so high? Was this due to the Hyperpack intake solely? How much head work was done on this as well?

Great build up!

Those are good numbers. Big valves too. They use a big block exhaust valve for the intake?

The carb is mounted with the primaries toward the head. Is this best for mixture distribution and would you expect similar results with the Clifford made manifold? I'm planing on the same carb and intake for my 170 build.

Yes, 127% VE on a NA engine is impressive.... the ram manifold really works.

We are tring to figure-out why the engine's VE falls off in the 2700 to 3000 RPM range.
I wish I was at they dyno session to do some advance curve tests to see if the problem is inside the distributor or if it is linked to something else.

Wow, that's 1.23 HP/cubic inch. Great naturally aspirated numbers better, in fact, than the 1.19 HP/cubic inch in my 2007 Honda Fit VTEC 1.5 engine with all of its modern technology.

That explains the sudden rush of power I get between the 2500 and 4000 range on my car. It's nice to see an actual number instead of "Well it, picked up an extra cylinder about here..."

Yeah but your Fit VTEC is sewing machine smooth, probably gets 35 mpg on regular and is CARB rated as a LEV-2. That Slant would idle like a 64 GMC V6 with one spark plug fouled, get 8 mpg on Premium and don't even think about getting it smogged. Modern tech isn't so bad.

Now that's funny. Also most performance engine dynos are corrected to a different factor than the OEMs use. If the slant test was corrected to SAE J1349 then the numbers would be comparible.

So you're saying it has character. And smogging is a non-issue, its old enough it doesn't have to be smogged.

And it aint good either. Its just a necessary evil so the un-interested masses can have transportation appliances and the rest of us can play with real cars and still breathe the air. :D

Well, if the big VE is really due to resonant ram effect in the manifold, then it only stands to reason that there is likely a counter-productive resonance at some RPM that will tend to have an anti-ram effect instead. But 300 RPM is a really sharp dip- I wouldn't expect a resonance to be that narrow unless you were going through alternate good and bad resonances *every* 300 RPM. Its hard to guess... tuned pipes with net mass flow through them do weird, wierd things, but it sure could be a disributor problem also. Interesting stuff, for sure!

Gosh, no need to go all Ludite on us. Believe it or not some modern cars like the Subaru Impreza I drive to work every day actually do have character to match the prehistoric stuff. Now I haven't driven a FIT but the car mags seem to love it. Why C&D had it at 16.7 and 81 mph in the quarter which is quicker by 0.9 second than the '66 Formula S Barracuda they tested in their June '66 issue. At the same time this little sh**tbox did 71.4 mph in their lane change test which was faster than the Z06 Vette they tested last year. That's at least a little bit of character for 15 G's don't ya think?

Its not a question of Luddite-ism (Luddism?). I'm glad modern cars exist, and I use them regularly. Old cars certainly can't provide transportation to the masses anymore. I just don't derive any pleasure or amusement from modern plastic cars. The're completely non-interesting appliances, even the ones with admittedly great performance. About the only thing that draws any measure of my interest would be a Charger SRT-8 or Magnum SRT-8. Or maybe the absolute hottest (still pretty lukewarm) Mustang you can buy. And even then, I wouldn't view it as anything with much long-term charm or durability. Where will a modern car be in 40 years? A bunch of brittle sun-baked shattered plastic in a junkyard somewhere.

I'd rather drive the Barracuda any day. A Honda might out-run it (unless you give the Barracuda a set of radials), but it'll never out-cool it under any circumstances.

If someone GAVE me one, I'd sell it and spend the 15 G's on gas for my Polara and Coronet R/T. :P

I'd love to drive my Valiant EVERY day, but driving it into the District of Columbia every day to work would probably be a bad idea.

My good friend in the car business says "there's an ass for every seat" so whatever works for you is cool with me.

Still, a naturally aspirated 1 1/4 HP/C.I. in what many folks thought of as a boat anchor is impressive to me.

GuyLR - thanks for the back-up numbers. I think the Fit Sport will do well for Honda. But yes, it is an economical and reliable appliance to get back and forth to work 80 miles a day while leaving more money and time for my Mopar. E'nuff about that! :?
