I think I found my oil leak finally. I believe the gasket around the fuel pump is gone. I'll probably change the pump all together since I have no idea how old it is. any brand recomendations? or should I leave it alone and just change the gasket

If it works, why spend the money to replace it? I would just replace the gasket and call it a day. However, if you were feeling snazzy, you could replace the mechanical fuel pump with an electric one and put the smallblock block-off blate on the hole instead.

Then again, replacig the fuel pump on a slant six is such a pisser on an a-body that you might want to just replace it while you are in there.

I've never been happy with aftermarket electric fuel pumps. Too noisy for me. For what a new pump costs and the pain involved in that tight spot, I'd replace it if your current one is old. JMHO.

I've been doing some minor repair / maintenance on a '82 Jeep CJ7 for my brother this past couple of months. It's an extra vehicle for him, and he has let it go unattended for several years.

I was ocassionally having trouble starting it. For some reason, the fuel filter (located near the carb like on our slants) would be dry. In trying to track down the problem, I discovered the rubber fuel line attached to the pump was deteriorated and collapsing flat. I guessed it was starving the carb, so I replaced the line. The next day, I got stranded away from my office at lunch with.....you guessed it..... a bad fuel pump.

The moral of this story is, if you don't know the history of your vehicle, and you're already into it elbow deep, go ahead and spend a few extra dollars to replace the fuel pump (and rubber lines). It might save you some headaches later.

By the way, this happened on my birthday, July 13, and everyone at the office was going to take me out for lunch...... but I wasn't there.
