....I apologise for this question, as i know it has appeared here before, but....I have a 225 slant-six marine engine, although that shouldn't matter here, it's still a 225. The numbers on the block under the carb are:

530-14 0178:

AAWJ
The numbers on the crank are: AAWJ
3698966-4

1538
I.m pretty sure that is at least a 1976, or 1977 with a cast crank.
I really need to know what year this is, so i can rebuild it properly.

What are the numbers on the pad near the alturnator?

DD I'll look. Appears that your photo shows the right side looking forward, just over the fuel pump....That's where my alt. mounts. At any rate, I'll look on both sides. Does the head need to be off to see it?

Yep, above the fuel pump, inboard of the alternator's lower bracket, below the #1 spark plug. You do not need to remove the head to see it, though you may have to scrape/clean away some grease.

(Are you sure the "F" is not an "E" ?? Sometimes the bottom of the E is near or off the edge of the lip it is stamped on.
"E" at the end = cast crank SL6
