I have a 264 dur. and 440 lift comp. cam and a comp cam timing chain set for my slant. I have thrown a degree wheel on it and checked this cam five times and it is off 10 degrees advance at 116 degrees. Cam card says 106 degrees on intake center line. I have watched the video and read the instructions numerous times and everytime it comes out to 116 degrees. My question is with this much offset do I try another timing chain set to get it closer and then use bushings to dial it in. Throw the whole thing away and start over. The timing set I have had one key way in the crank gear and a slot for the dowel pin in the cam gear. the slot now runs away from the cam bolt. Do I machine a slot in the cam gear to bring my center line back but then how do I keep it there and from moving back. I have ideas on how think I should fix the problem But this is my first degreeing of a cam. Please give me your ideas. The mad diesel tech. |

Are you sure you're checking the #1 intake lobe and not the #1 exhaust? Just asking as I've done that and come up with about the same error as you. |

I thought the same thing. I double checked and it is the intake lobe, If the intake lobe is the second one back from the front of the engine. |

Wow, 10° retarded is a lot. My 264 Comp Cam was right on. I didn't use a Comp timing set though. I suspect the Comp timing set is Cloyes anyway so that shouldn't affect the results. How did you find TDC? |

I lined up my timing marks on my cam and crank gear and rolled engine clockwise just pasted TDC and installed the piston stop. This is being done with the head off. I kepted turning clockwise till it hit the stop. Zeroed the degree wheel and then turned the engine counter clockwise till it hit the stop and read then marked the degree wheel. Took that number divided by two and then turned my degree wheel only to that mark and removed the piston stop and turned the engine to TDC. I hope this is right. I tried to follow the video and the instrution sheet to the letter. Double checking my self. |

I always find TDC with the dial indicator. You need one anyway for degreeing the cam so it's not like you have to buy one just to find TDC. I put the engine at what looks like TDC and line up the TDC mark on the wheel. I turn the engine one way and then the other so the dial indicator shows like .100" down and adjust the degree wheel until .100" down is the same number of degrees before and after TDC. |
