What is the second pigtail for on some lean burn distributors? Is it by any chance a crank trigger, or crank reference that fires just once each revolution? Accel makes a dual sync districutor that has two functions, one is an ignition trigger, and the other is a crank reference. I just wondered if Mopar was doing something similar here. If it is a crank reference, then maybe it could be used to set up sequential EFI with the Accell Gen VII. If anyone here knows what it does, then I have to ask Rance if it can be made to work that way with the Accel computer.

If I understand correctly, one is a "start" pickup and the other is a "run" pickup. While cranking, the computer uses the start pickup, which is several more degrees advanced, as the trigger. During normal operation it uses the run pickup. This allows less initial advance, yet still gives easy starting. I would think that they could have figured out how to just advance it electronically during cranking though...

Cstryker has it right.

On my 86 van I have two pickups, a start pickup and a run pickup. The start pickup is roughly 180degrees opposite the run pickup.

It looks like one could easily be used as a crank trigger and the other as a timing refernce.
