Post subject: | engine hesitation!! carb???? |
i have a 1968 dodge polara 500 with a 225.suddenly it started hesitating when i would gas it,if i give it slight throttle it is fine but any more it just won't go.it idles fine and revs up ok when in park.all the tune up things were just done as well as the fuel pump.i began to load the engine up with the car in gear and the brakes on but the engine stumbles.after several attempts the adjust the air/fuel mixture and try loading it up again it backfired through the carb and stalled. i fired back up again and loaded it up , no hesitation. i drove it around the block and it ran great. when i got home i turned it off(5 minutes) then started it again to make sure but the hesitation was there again. i sent the carb out today to get rebuilt.the original holley 1920(same problem)was swapped when i replaced the head(new design,no plug tubes,1976 volare?)with another carb(1 brl, told its a holley,no holley markings?)is this a carb issue? or should i be checking elsewere?and what kind of holley is it? |

Sounds like the accelerator pump isn't giving you it's best shot... Start the engine, with the choke plate open and the engine idling, look down the throat of the carb (safety glasses are good in case of backfire), goose the throttle lever good...you should see a really nice "squirt" come from a small hole in the side of the carb...if the squirt looks a little faint or non-existant...time to rebuild and clean...in some models it's time to find another carb.... (I just had this problem happen on a stock Holley 1920...the dunk and rebuild didn't cure it, I replaced it with an Economaster Version and runs good now with a nice crisp "shot"). Good luck, -D.Idiot |

there is a healthy amount of fuel going down when i checked it but maybe not enough? but i still can't figure out why it happened all of a sudden.i sprayed carb cleaner by the throttle linkage rod and there is alot of vacuum leak there, also when the engine is off and i was opening up the throttle a few times gas was coming out of the throttle linkage rod,can new bushings be pressed into this carb? |

i just installed my rebuilt carb and man what a difference.it idles perfect and runs strong.i didn't even have to make any adjustments whats so ever.the rebuilders did an awesome job and apparently they are well known around here (always return the carb pre-set)of course i fiddled with it a bit but every adjustment was brought back to where it was. |
