Just fried my starter today. It seemed like it was waiting to happen soon though since it always grudged a bit if the engine didnt catch immediately. I found that my battery ground had melted and the cables get 'mucho' hot. The starter sizzled and started to smoke. Well, I thought figures put off the HEI conversion again :shock: I was wondering if anybody would know if this is another problem that led to this happening or just a broken starter period what makes it fry like that?
So a good standard replacement would be the previously mentioned 89'-01' dodge scrappers?

This kind of cable meltdown and sizzling starter is generally caused by a short to ground within the starter, usually from the field coils to the case.

I had to leave it at the mall parking lot but disconnected the battery because it seemed like it had a meltdown and was shorted. The heat didnt dissapate on the housing and feared that if i left it, it would start an electrical fire :shock:So I could go for the 'mini' starter replacement 89'-01'?

I got it back home! I left it for the day to give it a rest and let her cool down so Im thankful for not needing a tow Whew, it was close to not happening. :P Now to yank the ol' starter outta there.

Ripped the starter open looks like the armature was grinding against the housing in one spot I guess that constitutes as a ground doesn't it? :P apparently it was rebuilt once and looks like it went through hell and back so now it's toast.

Did your starter whine for three seconds after a miss? I thought that all
starters nowadays had gear brakes, until I heard this one. Anyone know if they are available as aftermarket to install on working starters?

All the Chrysler gear-reduction starters have a brake washer installed under the driven gear. If this washer is worn out, missing, or lubricated, the starter will take forever to spin down.

My armature was so off-center, it was grinding the top of the field case and overloading so the more you ran it, the sooner it died down or slowed as if your battery was low. So no, it had no problem 'grinding to a hault' :D
