Post subject:  alternator rebuild
Im going to the junkyard monday to grab a starter, and thought I would look into getting an alternator for backup and if they have any slants pick up an few other pieces. Id like to see if I could 'freshen' one up for later use if needed What brand makes a good alternator kit?

What year are you looking for?

I never found any kits for mine (64)..........

But you can probably piece together the parts (bearings, diodes, brushes), and it might even be cheaper that way too..... (replaced bearings on mine, everything else was good)

There are no good-quality alternator rebuild kits. Those kits you sometimes find at the parts store are low-quality (oops, we're supposed to say "Consumer-grade") trash. The easy parts to replace are the rear bearing, both brushes and, on '72-up "squareback" alternators, the diodes.

The diodes on a '60-'71 "roundback" alternator require a press and excellent soldering skills for installation (no, you cannot bang them into place, that spoils them).

The front bearing on all of the alternators requires a special tool to remove the pulley, a bearing puller, and a press to put the pulley back on.

I blame Haynes for making it sound more 'doable' than all that. Ill still grab a backup though. Any good make/year swaps like the starter?

I didn't find it all that hard to replace the bearings........

Used a gear puller on the pulley and my press for both bearing removals...... (Harbor Freight $99 press).....

The key was the press.......

Well, if you get a '72-up alternator (squareback type case) the diodes are easier to replace. The later alternators (about '80-'87) have different windings that help out the low-RPM charging. These are the ones that have almost no gap between the front and rear housing halves, while the earlier ones have about a 3/8" laminated stack of steel plates visible between the two halves (that is the stator core).

So there isn't any non-slant alternators that would fit from say a later dodge or other like in the case of the later mini starter?

You can install the Nippondenso, Bosch or Chrysler 40/90 alternator off an '89 M-body w/318 or an '89-'91 Dodge truck w/V6, 318 or 360, BUT you will need to either modify your stock cast iron lower alternator bracket or use the 2-piece stamped steel lower bracket used on slants with the 100A alternator (rare), and the top slider bracket from the '88-'89 M-body w/318 (or one of those curved chrome universal top slider brackets).
