Number doesn't quite look complete to me. That initial 8 may well in fact be a "B", check carefully. The next three digits are self explanatory (225, engine displacement). The "R" is cryptically defined as "engine usage code", don't know how to decode that. 672 is a date code...are you sure there's not a fourth digit there in that group? E = cast crank. |

One other helpful number is the VIN # which is stamped 'sideways' on a pad at the rear of the engine. You will need a mirror to see it with the engine in the car. Basically, there are two groups of cast crank engines: 1977-80 solid lifter engines. 1981-86 hydraulic lifter engines. (wide valve cover) Check to see which "valve train" is in your engine and you have all the info. you need to order the correct rebuild parts. DD |

DD Thanks, Yes it has a cast crank, and solid lifters. I have the engine spread out on the shop floor. Those numbers are all that i can see in that particular place. I will look in the other place you mentioned, and get back here tomorrow. Thanks, Gray |

DD The numbers that i have posted befpre on a plate and embossed on the block are: 530-14 0178: AAWJ Does that mean it's a "78? |
