Post subject:  Ball & Trunnion boot update - pics

I found this post and liked the idea of a 10 dollar part.
Quote:
I needed a boot for a B&T shaft and used a CV joint boot, Moog #CV4482. I cut about 3" off the front and used the rear section. After cutting it off, the boot will be symmetrical and about 4" long if I recall correctly. Price was about $10.00.

I have had several shafts converted and the last one cost me $220 with balance and 2 new u-joints.

BTW, you might want to enter the info you have on those replacement boots in the parts database under "B&T boot".
I was looking for more information on this CV4482 boot.
I have some info but can't access the Parts List section, so here it is:

Some places were able to look it up by the part number, but some said they needed to know what the application was.

CV4482 is an Outer Boot for a 1985 Nissan Stanza XE.
NAPA 42-61010 is $10.99

I trimmed only 1 1/2 inches.

After trimming, he overall length is 3 3/8 inches.

The smaller end is a little loose, so I'm going to make a spacer that will hopefully work as a breather like the pic in the service manual.
If I can find someone with one of those fancy cameras or a multi-function cell phone, I'll post some pictures.

I donno, man, all this cutting and trimming and splicing, etc...why not just get the correct boot & clamp kit? P/N Q102 from Andy Bernbaum, www.oldmoparts.com (listed for '60-'62 Valiant/Lancer because his catalogue stops at '62, fits A-bodies through '65).

Money.

Because I only paid 11 dollars, I have enough for a few Taco Bell 79 cent bean burritos for dinner tonight.

When I have more money, I would rather have a modern driveshaft made for about 200 bucks, rather then spend $65 or something on a piece of rubber.

And time.

This way I can patch together my driveshaft tomorrow. If I ordered it from somewhere, I would have to wait to have it shipped.

I know I have time tomorrow to work on it. Next week, who knows if I'll have time or a place to work on it.

I am under the impression that Chuck Rivers knows what he's talking about (I know I don't).
I stumbled upon some information that would make it easier to find this part and I thought it would help someone out.

Fair enough, $11 is certainly cheaper than $24 (not $65) that Bernbaum charges.

That would be $24 plus shipping, of course.
I also do not like buying parts that I cannot inspect first.

The rubber this is made of is fresh and supple.
I don't know Bernbaum and I have never seen the product he sells.

BTW, Chuck asked that anyone with info post it in the Part List section. That section is not available, so here we are.

Nice dinner!
Please accept this fart in the spirit it was given.

Yeah...plus tax/minus shipping or plus shipping/minus tax, usually seems to balance out, so I didn't factor that in.

FYR, Bernbaum is a long-established and reliable source; never known him to sell anything but top stuff.

Will you be showing us some pictures of this CV boot repurpose? I'd like to see how it comes out!

Post subject:  trunnion joint boot

If all you need is the boot RobertsMotorParts has the boots. About $25.
I got one from them and using the FSM procedure was able to
replace it without disassembling the entire joint.

No cutting or modification was required since it is a good reproduction.

T65 is the part number for the truck version - But for the valiants and darts you need the small version of the boot.

I think I read about this on the other slantsix site - might be more info over there.

Thanks for the info. This pic is from Roberts Motor Parts.
www.oldmoparts.com and www.robertsmotorparts.com are the better answer.

My Stanza boot installed nicely.
I'm sorry I wasn't able to take a picture of it before the driveshaft was reinstalled.
We'll see how long it lasts.

I was amazed that there was still lots of grease in the joint even though my old boot was broken.

For a breather (and spacer) I used a length of 1/8" thick cotton fabric belt
under the smaller end.
I clamped it so about 3/16 of cotton was showing and then added three spots of Goop to the cotton to prevent it from disappearing into the boot.

The original photo disappeared long ago.

Here is a new photo that was taken after about nine years of use.

Cool of you to update this after so long. Any idea on the number of miles on the boot now?
