Post subject:  No Go 904 Need help ASAP

I'm having problems with my 904 not going into gear. I have installed the mp shift kit, adjust the line pressure, and installed a new 3500 stall converter. I've read on past posts about converter alignment causing this problem, but I've installed engines and transmissions before and never had this happen. I put in only 6 qts. of fluid and the dipstick reads full. Could it be a line pressure problem? It is acting like the converter is not engaging and freewheeling. I also tried tying the kickdown band all the way back, but no difference. Any ideas?? Thanks, Brian

This may sound basic, but is your gear selector linkage properly adjusted?

Brian, what year engine and trans? What is the part number of the shift kit?
Also, when you installed the trans, and the trans was bolted up to the block, did you have to pull the torque converter up to the flexplate, or was the convertor pushing on the flexplate.

When I installed the block, I triple checked that the converter was in the proper place. Plus the block and tranny would never bolted up if the converter was pushed too far forward. The shift kit is the mp one that you remove the accumulator spring, add the block off tube and increase the line pressure. Not sure of the part # but I know it is for the 904. I know when I had the valve body out, the roller ball for the shift mechanism did fall out.l Put it back in and checked it. If that ball was not in place the shift mechanism would not (Click) and the shifter would float all over the place. This is not the case. The transmission is a 74 904 with a midwest 3500 stall converter. Engine is a 71. Is it possible that the fluid level with 6 qts. is still way too low to achieve proper converter engagement and line pressure?? There was not a single drop of fluid in the transmission when i put it in. Calls for 8 qts. Put in around 1/2 qrt. in the converter before i installed it. (Would not take anymore) So I got at least 7 qts in it and the dipstick reads full. Looks like I will be pulling the night shift to get this thing ready for Pittsburgh. : The engine runs great, just need to fab up some throttle brackets and maybe swap out a tranny. :? Not too bad with less than a week to go. Thanks, Brian

The reason I asked about the year, I wanted to make sure you did not have a early small spline trans, with a late large spline converter. Is the shift lever, inside the trans(the part that spring loaded ball engages) engaged to the manual shift valve?
PS I have my trans out also. I did not like my 2nd to high shift, at Valdosta.

Shift linkage inside the trans sounds like a great idea to me.

Well, I pulled the pan last night and found the throttle lever assembly pulled away from the manual valve. Pulled it back in place and put a small bend at the end of the lever, to keep it from popping out again. Drained about 4 qts. of fluid from the pan, so the converter must be filled. Checked everything in all gears, looks good. I will start it up after work and see what happens  Thanks for the help guys.

Kinda thought that might be your problem, when you said the "detent" ball when fell out. I have had that happen to me. Put the ball back in place and "miss" the valve with the lever.

A safety note here: When working on the trans, and filling with fluid, make sure the parking brake is on, and the wheels blocked (or in the air). In Brians case it would have been possible for the manual valve to be in an "in gear" position, and the car could have started to move as the fluid was added.

So both of us got our transmissions fixed. See you this weekend at Pittsburg.

With the 3.91's I will be in the chirp second contest. 8)

Post subject:  Good news

I am not Brian, but I am happy to report that we got it running and moving under it's own power.

We took it for a spin up and down the street with open headers in a surburban Neghiberhood.

When we pulled back in the driveway, the Police man that lives across the street from Brian brought his so over to see what was making "all that noise"

Thanks to all who chimed in here!
