Hi,

I just purchased a 1961 Dodge Dart with the slant 6. I would like to swap out the points with an electronic ignition. I noticed that Mopar Performance offers a kit, but not sure if it is for this engine. Could anyone help steer me in the right direction?

the easiest way to do it, in my opinion is the pertronix conversion. see http://www.pertronix.com/

armed with the part number, go to summit and get the kit.

getting a later /6 electronic dizzy and converting is another option. they pop up on ebay ALL the time. you can also go hunting at boneyards for the dizzy, just make sure it has a vacuum advance, otherwise you end up with a lean burn set up....not good unless you are doing FI or some other type of timing set up.

this leaves you with options on how to derive spark: use the mopar control unit or this 'update' using GM HEI parts

I agree, Pertronix isn't the only way to go, but it sure is easy, and looks stock since it sits right inside the dist. cap. Best to also get the recommeded "flamethrower" ignition coil while you are at it, and upgrade your voltage regulator to solid state. There are a few replacement regulators that look stock. Or you could hollow out the one you have and put a hand wired reg in there. You will then have a trouble free, healthy-sparking ignition.

I've heard good things about the Pertronix II. Many, if not most, replacement voltage regulators are now electronic inside - it's cheaper than relays. The one I got from J.C.Whitney for a 1965 was all electronic inside, but looked very close to stock outside, worked great, for $10.

You know my voltage regulator does not look stock, it may have been switched already. I will check with the local auto parts store for a replacement and see if it is the same.
