My 225 needs a new starter, I was looking at a refurbished one from autolite at checker auto for $40. Would this be a good choice? Its nothing high performance, it might get a supersix and dutras one day, though.

Thanks.

Also, I know this isnt the place for this but, what bolt pattern would a '70 dart with drums have? and what do the wheel dimensions mean? e.g. 15"x10

Go to your local wrecking yard and get a "mini" starter off an '89 up V6 or V8 out of a truck or van. Clean it up, maybe paint the center black and whala, a good starter for around 30 bucks. Any rebuilt unit you get is likly to be junk, since the starters for our slants havn't been made for a long time. So who knows how many times they have been remanufactured! The only thing to go wrong with the mini starters is the solonoid contacts. An easy, 15 doller fix and a half hour of time.

Your Dart with drums will have the small, 5X4" bolt pattern. On wheels, a 15X10 means the wheel is 15" diamater, 10" wide.

After finding out my local wrecker wanted $60 canadian for an 82' starter, I managed to get a mini one off ebay for $40 CAN. Its brand new NOS not rebuilt still has the chrysler sticker on it :D Thats alot better than what the local parts store wanted $256 for a rebuilt mini without core

It would be a very poor choice. "Remanufactured" parts from the parts store are not a good idea to buy; their performance, reliability and durability are not good——despite the "lifetime warranty" (which means you will spend your lifetime returning dead parts under warranty).

What symptom are you getting that indicates the need for a replacement starter?

The mini starter others are posting about is one good option...be careful if you go this route to get a genuine Nippondenso-made one, not one of the inferior copycat items (often sold on eBay as "Nippondenso type"). The Chinese are excellent counterfeit artists, so it's getting harder to tell what you're getting (Chrysler stickers are just as easy to copycat as anything else). An '89-'01 Dodge truck or rear-drive van with 3.9 V6, 5.2 or 5.9 V8 will donate a fully compatible starter, as will almost any '62-'88 rear-drive Mopar passenger car with slant-6 or V8 engine. Another option is to have your existing starter rebuilt by a good local auto electrical house.

The Nippondenso mini starters are smaller, lighter and spin the engine very fast. And except in very rare cases, the only thing that ever goes wrong with them is the easily-replaced contacts. I prefer a well-built Chrysler starter (the kind you have now), 'cause I don't like my slant-6s sounding like Subarus when cranked.

Mini starter contact repair is here.

There are three bolts on the end of the solonoid, under the posts you put the wires on. Take those out, pop the cover off and take the guts out, put new ones in. Very easy. The Nippondenso starter used by Mopar is also the same basic unit used on Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nisson, etc, so the kit (used to be on the parts list here, I don't have it off hand) will have two different contact sets and plunger. I changed mine in the parts store parking lot in the trunk in a half hour, including removing and replacing the starter. The only thing to be carefull of is remembering the fiber insulation between the contacts and housing gets installed correctly after removing them.

Edit: See Dans post above for the link and pictures.
