I'd like to change my ratio to 3.23 from 2.76. Would it be better to swap in the 7 1/4 rear with 3.23 gears or just use the gears?

Depends if you can easily find a 7¼" A-body 3.23 rear axle. Be advised that with the extreme engine mods/upgrades you've been talking about, a 7¼" would not be a wise choice. Better to swap in an 8¼" unit.

I may have found one in my area. I ve heard it both ways- some say the 7 1/4 will hold alot and some just like bigger.

2.76 is a great ratio for the road but I would try to get a heftier rear axle for anything bigger than a stock / six car.

That rear end will take a lot - of what it was designed for.

Did any of these 7 1/4 rear come behind any V8s?
My HP goals are in the 250-290 range.

i had one in a 72 dodge dart w/a 318. it did finally grenade, but that was after MUCH abuse. and many many miles.

put one right back into it and never had a problem...even had one in a Mirada if i am not mistaken also a 318 car. didn't get to break that one, as it was crushed by some guy in a chevy p/u.

erring on the side of caution would say to put an 8.25 in there, but i have a 7.25 in my 65 and until it breaks thats whats gonna' stay.

sb

Usually break the cross shaft or blow the spider gears to pieces. I have already shredded one 7 1/4 under my Duster. Ripped the spider and cross shaft to pieces.

my 69 dart with a 318 has a 7.25 rear --I'm assuming non=performance cars were outfitted with these while the 340's & larger got the beefer stuff!!
