Anybody know what this is? Looks like it might be a home-brewed turbo exhaust manifold mounting the turbo directly behind the carb?

I'd want to see that closely, but it doesn't look very home made to me. Ask him for a detail picture of the exhaust flange area so we can see if it's welded.

I saw this same manifold referenced in one of the Mopar mags by Steve Magnante a few years ago. I think it's a prototype production manifold for a factory slant turbo set-up. I'll see if I can find the issue, but it's been quite a while...

Yep, I'm guessing a factory turbo exhaust manifold. Look at how the exhaust outlet is not in the centre, but offset to the rear, yet there's no cut-and-weld evident at the centre area, as there would be if this were a modified stock manifold. I've got a call in to Bill Weertman to see if he recalls it.

One of the former Chrysler engineers on my speed dial instantly recognised the manifold:

"Yep. Chrysler built at least one turbo'd slant six, installed in a chocolate brown '80 Cordoba with a caramel coloured vinyl roof. It was a development car that didn't pan out. Somehow the thing got sold out into the real world and was a royal pain in the aѕѕ. Blew head gaskets constantly. I think somebody finally o-ringed the block to get it to seal and even that didn't work too well. Haven't seen this beast in a LOOONNNG time!"

I going to try and buy this thing off of the guy. He is selling abunch of car parts cheap. I want to look at the hydraulic slant six motor he is selling too.

And thanks to moderator who fixed my typographically challenged previous post title!

Post subject:  A new twist

Just heard back from Bill Weertman, who was Chrysler Corp's Chief Engine Engineer for many years (early '60s through early '90s):

Hi Dan -

The exhaust manifold in the photo of the attachment you sent was interesting. I am certain it is the manifold of the turbocharged diesel version of the Slant Six engine. A cross-section of the engine, shown on Figure 41a of "A History of Chrysler Corporation's Slant Six Engine", displays the exhaust manifold in situ. Just before its abrupt termination in 1983 the program was on a path to go into production, which would account for the manifold having a cast-on part number and pentastar.

The five or six engines that were being tested at the time of program cancellation were put in storage and later sent to the Chrysler Historical Collection where they still reside. Since there was a multitude of stockroom parts it is not surprising that a wayward exhaust manifold has appeared on the "outside".

The turbocharged gasoline-fueled Slant Six was a much smaller program and never came close to being a production engine. I have a very vague memory that the turbocharger mounting flange was located at the center of the exhaust manifold. When the small block LA V8 engine was designed to fit in the engine compartments of the compact Valiant and Dart models as a power upgrade the need for a turbocharged Slant Six engine evaporated and the program was cancelled.

So, to my mind, that makes the manifold considerably more interesting (and probably less useable in the real world).

Too bad that turbodiesel slant-6 never came to fruition; sounds like it got really close.

I sent the guy an e-mail asking if he wanted to sell it but I haven't heard back from him. I would buy it just to resell it to someone who would appreciate it rather than junk it.

A turbo diesel slant would have been excellent!

Wonder what type of turbo it mounted? You may or may not be able to find one now....

That weenie! I didn't tell him any details, I just asked him if he wanted to sell it!

Whoever owns that manifold QUIT LURKING AND SPEAK UP!!!!

Is there any chance that there are some odd manifolds that were made for forklifts or other industrial applications that are nothing like the automotive manifolds?

Post subject:

I have driven a few slant powered forklifts and as near as i could tell the only difference between the forklift slant and an automobile slant was the propane carb and plumbing. Intake and exhaust was identical.
