Is it possible to remove only the intake manifold without removing the exhaust manifold? The vacuum valve on the rear of the intake manifold was broke and leaking. When I tried to remove the valve, it snapped off like a twig. It had the frailty of a saltine cracker. Anyways, now I need to remove the intake manifold, tap out the hole and rethread it for a new valve. Any tips on an easier removal and installation would be greatly appreciated.

This will depend largely on wether or not you have a stud or a bolt on the inboard nut fastening thre intake and exhaust together. Both were used from the factory. If you have a stud, forget it, but if you have a bolt you *may* be able to sneak just the intake off. Of course, the only effort you will save is removing the two outboard most nuts on the exhaust manifold.

The practical answer is "No". You will have to replace the manifold-to-head gasket as soon as you pull either manifold, so you must pull both.

Too many people who were born on third base actually believe they've hit a triple.

I always combine exhaust and intake business at the same shop (my headers shop, they're cool enough so everytime I want to try something diffrent on the intake I go to them so they reseal the whole thing.) I end up loosing no time guessiing at exhaust or intake vacuum leaks.. straight to the business of tuning up the diffrent carb/s. 99% they don't charge me but I solved the emarrasement to myself tipping them big time... so they're happy and I can have a place to "play" with in/ex combo w/o going thru pain in the butt sealing issues. I usually leave the car overnight to zero cool down and then take it there in the morning on a truck deck w/o even touching the starter. Zero cool is zero cool...

In ten years I have never had the manifolds off. No broke studs and everything sealed back up good. I wanted to replace all the studs but couldn't find any on a Sunday. Oh well, building a new engine this spring.
