Slant Six Forum :: power steering pump installed using manual box

I am in the process of building a sepentine belt system to run alt, water pump, A/C and power steering. I don't have a power steering gear box yet but I'd like to complete the belt system.
Do you see a problem routing the high pressure line directly in the the return line on the pump until I get the steering box installed? Of course filling pump with fluld. Do you think the fluid will foam to much do to constant circulation?

don't know. the fluid moves pretty fast through the system anyways. i would say put it on and give it a try. can't hurt it, right? zedpapa

Is the pressure regulator in the pump or in the gear box? I'd say if its in the pump it might not be ok, but if its in the steering box I am comfortable with this type of installation. My gut is telling me it fine both ways. The possiable foaming is what I am worried about.

In fact, it should "thrash" the fluid a lot less than running it through the gearbox which develops back-pressure on the pump. Without back-pressure the fluid will just pump in a circle. The worst thing is turning a power steering box hard against the stops, which develops high enough back-pressure to lift the pump's internal relief valve and sprays the fluid hard back into the inside of the pump housing/reservoir... but the fluid and pump can survive that just fine too.

Theres a good amount of pressure coming out the high side of the pump, but the return is only held on by a single clamp with slip on hose (at least the pumps I've seen...) I'd double or tripple up on the hose clamps (in opposing directions), and use the EFI type ones. Can't remember if hose diameters are different too. Why don't you just run a shorter serpentine belt skipping over the pump all together until you get a power box?

Might want to hook up one of those little inline power steering pump coolers. you can find them at junkyards all the time.
