i put a new speedometer head in the instrument panel, reinstalled the panel, resecured the steering wheel, went to hook up the speedo cable and couldn't get it to slide all the way on. i pulled the metal cable out of the cable sleeve, put it in the back of the speedo head to make sure it got in there good, then pulled the cable sleeve up and got it halfway on but no matter what ridiculous position i put my body in under that dash or what force i use it won't slide more than halfway on. my hands are torn up. everything has been lubricated. anyone have any tips? right now the speedo makes a soft ticking sound but neither the needle nor the odometer moves. |

Jack up car, remove speedo cable from the tranny and any "clamps"/holders under the car (there's at least one tab, and the nut on the tranny/speedo gear holder). make sure you have a little slack, hook up speedo to speedo cable again(or you can hookup the inner part, then snug the outer part up after that)....under car, push the inner part in until it's snug, attach assembly to the tranny, tighten nut, test the assembly). -D.Idiot |

The central core is easy to accidentially stretch, but doesn't return to its old length. You can easily make it a little shorter with a Dremel & #409 blade. |

that was going to be my next question, because i was able to pull quite a bit of cable out of the housing. where is the speedo attatchment on the tranny, bottom, side, front, back? and I am assuming i just hook it up on the speedo side, cut the extra on the tranny side and then reattatch it there, right? and it should hook up to speedo with instrument panel mounted, correct? thanks all... |

Generally, for cars w/o factory cruise, the cable slides out from the dash end, for cars w/ factory cruise, there are 2 cables that both slide out toward the cruise unit. The factory manual will show you the details. It should be very easy to spot where the cable housing passes through the firewall and where it comes into the trans from beneath the car. |
