64 Valiant. My hubcaps rotate slightly and bend over the valvestem even after a short distance but I never lost one. They have broken one valvestem. Anyone ever have this happen? should I just bend out the tabs for grip? |

I had this with the 13" full wheelcovers on my '64 Valiant. First, I confirmed that they were indeed "walking" around the wheel. Then, I gently tweeked the teeth outward. Very gently. This seemed to work for a couple of months, at which time I came up with an even better solution for me:

Just one more reason I don't like wheel covers. Now, Baby Moons on chrome reverse wheels are pretty sweet. |

Those whitespoke wheels...do they come in 4" bolt pattern? Where'd you get 'em? |

Check you rims carefully: most of the OEM rims in this era had raised bumps in the rim, where the wheel-cover fits, that acted as "locking lugs" and prevented the wheel cover from "walking". If rims get replaced through the years, sometimes later rims do not have these "bumps", and the OEM wheel covers "walk", or sometimes even come off the wheel ! In the case of the full wheel covers on my '60 Chrysler, there are bumps all around the rim, that the smooth, rolled lip of the wheel cover grabs on, and are the ONLY rims that will work with the stock wheel covers. I have a '64 Valiant that has it's original rims (13"): I know for sure that there are two raised bumps, one on either side of the valve-stem hole. I am presently running the SS Valiant "dog-dishes"... I wouldn't mind having a set of the correct '63-'64 "turbine" wheel covers... If you have the rim bumps, you might be able to tweak the teeth on the wheel cover for a better grip. I did this with success on my '61 Belvedere ( although they still tended to "creak" at low speeds). Good luck !

Took me a long time to figure that out... When I was a kid, I liked to collect wheel covers, and swap them around the various family cars... I was really bummed that I could never get a set of stainless wheel covers from a '58 Impala to stay on Mom's '70 Ambassador ( hey, I was six...) ... the Impala covers had that rolled, smooth rim - no teeth ! The AMC rims had no bumps ! ( So I used a set of toothy stainless wheelcovers from a '58 Fury instead !  )...Wonder how many guys are going crazy trying to find "bumpy" rims for their restos... |
