When I got my 81 Ram 150 the guy told me that the power steering bracket was broken. Well it was loose and one of the "adjusting bolts" (just not sure what to call them, they are the ones not on the block but connect the block side to the pump bracket) has the head sheared off but still holding. I have too much slack in the belt and the chiltons manual is vague as far as what to do. I have to get the other books. Also when I got it the pump was empty. I have since filled the pump and tightened the block mounting but I have not been able to tighten the belt. The book states that I needed to turn to the stops to bleed the system but after many turns and a drive it still is jerky durning turns. Any suggestions. Thanks, |

All I can suggest is to remove the pump & bracket and extract the broken bolt. Usually, they break because somebody puts in a bolt that's too long; it bottoms w/o tightening the bracket, so they torque it until the head breaks off. If enough is sticking out after you get the bracket off, you can try vice grips, stud puller, etc. to unscrew what's left. If not, you'll have to try to drill into it and get it out w/ an easyout or the like. While it is preferred that you drill using a left-hand drill, in my experience the bolt is always so stuck that it makes no difference whether you use a left- or right-hand drill. Sears carries a combination drill/screw extractor - I've not tried them yet. You can also try using a #409 Dremel bit to cut a slot in the end and try to use a screwdriver bit to unscrew it. Penetrating oil, hot wax, etc. might help too. |
