Post subject:  Clifford Preformance rebuild kit

Im currently looking to rebuild a 225 /6 for preformance, it will live most of its life on the street and poss. some bracket work. I have thought of the Clifford Preformance rebuild kit with Hyperpak. Now here is the rub. What I have heard is that there are a lot of problems with there parts/castings. Are there any good alternatives for a package deal or is this the only alt? Ill be putting the engine in a stock 66 a Cuda w/ auto xmission. Dont want to bash any company, however noone has money to throw away.
Thanks,
Frank

"Most of its life on the street" and "Hyper Pak" don't go together very well.

Don't just grab onto the notion of "x" manifold or "y" build kit or "z" carburetor or "n" horsepower number, that's a great way to waste money and wind up disappointed. Instead, spend some time thinking specifically about your goals for performance, economy, driveability, compliance (emission tests?) and budget (time/money/effort). How fast do you want to go, and how quickly do you want to accelerate to that speed? How are we planning on stopping this higher-power car, and steering it around curves? Remember that power upgrades call for brake upgrades, suspension upgrades, cooling system upgrades, tire and wheel upgrades, etc.

And be careful with Clifford (quality problems, lousy customer service, sloppy money-handling practices, poor advice, oversell...).

I wouldnt buy a rebuild kit, you just dont know what your engine will need until you have machine work done.

I think the short ram Clifford intake would be better for you, a little better fuel destribution from what all the results show and more flow. Then a good Holley vacume secondary carb( I noticed Summit has 425cfm or along that line for around $200.00) the 390cfm holley cost alot but would be good also. If your not looking to make hugh power the super six setup makes good power and I see them on Ebay all the time, along with some other assorted aftermarket intakes. A good vacume secondary Holley still seems to give many good results with fuel milage if setup right. If you wanted to spend the Money a Demon 525 would be a good choice but they cost pretty good, but they are very ajustable and would probably make a good peformance/driver setup(but they are about $400.00 to $500.00) but I have seen Demons setup that got EFI fuel milage but it takes a dyno or a wideband O2 to get them there, and ofcourse the power is great.(but the holley power is good also). All the carbs can be setup and get great milage, but it takes more work for most than the Demon. Even 600-650-750cfm carbs have been used with success.

Most that I have seen post problems with the casting had to do some grinding around where the studs/bolts go to get them to fit good(not a biggy IMHO). Now I have not bought from Clifford myself, but unless you find used I dont know where you would get a Intake. A small amout of grinding seems to be the norm for most of the intakes you buy new anyway. The Clifford short ram seems to be the best performer from all the research I have done. (unless you start going 3webs or EFI)

Alot depends on how much power you want to make & how fast you wish to go & how much money you want to spend. Like always there are many ways to skin a cat as they say.

    Thanks guys,
I know one size does NOT fit all. I was looking at a way to get most of my parts for the internals of the engine that would be compatable. Ohter than a few tractor engines, this will be my first rebuild in 30 years. Last one was a 330 Olds 30 over with mild cam and quad jet. My 14 years old son will be helping me and he has no experance at all. I had a 70 Hemi Cuda and loved the raw power. Money wise I can put about 5k into the car total and its an AZ car so not much body work will need to be done. Interior and paint, Engine ,drive train etc. right now the car has stock /6 blown auto xmission and Valiant rear. Am picking up block heads cam etc next weekend then about the 21st will take to the shop to get the block/heads checked
    hope this update helps
    Thanks

Post subject:  Well one thing I learned on this board proved VERY worthwhil

    Hi,

I learned one thing from this board and it sure proved out...I will paraphrase it to say like us older guys, good aerobic capacity is a good thing in an older engine rebuild...in other words spend some time making sure it can breathe..big valves, (I used 340 springs) read what Lou adn Dr. Dodge say about the high rise cam, a little porting, good exhaust...dunno but what my great breathing is why my new engine runs so strong, (500cfm 4bbl) My headwork was worth every penny, and it wasn't spent on milling (well, manifolds as a unit and head were milled to match as perfectly as possible).

Yup, "many ways to skin a cat" indeed, but none that the cat is gonna like!
