5.5 inch wide 14" SBC wheels that is. I guess one shouldn't measure wheels simply by hooking a tape measure across the wheel. The tire shop said they wouldn't mount 215-70-14 to my wheels. I thought this to be strange until I got a little lesson on how to measure a wheel. I would like to run a 7" wide x 14 steel wheel andc still be able to mount the dish hub caps. Any one know if this wheel is available? The guy at the tire shop said he didn't think I'd be able to find one that would still let me mount the dish caps. I have Cragar SS's SBC now. I have a vibration at about 50 - above. Had the wheels balanced and all wheels took a normal amount of lead weight. The balancer guy said he thought the one of my wheels might be bent. He put it on the back. I was looking at the tires today and noticed that they all are dry rotted badly in the center of the tread. Rather large cracking that is scary enough to me to keep me from driving the car and I tipicaly don't scary easily. The question is: How can I be sure the my wheels are indeed straight and it was just then 12 year old rubber causing the vibration? Is a normal tire shop able to confirm this or would they be guessing like the other shop may have? Putting it on the balancer with out rubber and standing back and watching it doesn't seem good enough to me. If it is found to be bent, is there a place that straightends wheels?

You should be able to tell if it's bent by jacking it up and spinning the wheel............ If need be, line something up as a pointer at the flange and see how much variance there is when you spin the wheel. If the wheels straight, you can then check against the tire. An old tire can get into a tread seperation condition and cause an inbalance. And finally, I don't know of a wheel wider than a 5.5" x 14" with the SBP unless you get them custom made

if you find 7" wide sbp steel wheels let me know I've been looking-- I would suggest new tires are in order -- your rims are probably fine-- if the tires are that old & rotted -- they could very well cause your vibration

Most large size towns have custom wheel shops that can take the center of any wheel you bring them and use it to make a custom rim of any width and offset you want. I have never done it, but have heard others tell of doing it.

In Oregon it used to be Willamette Custom Wheels, haven't seen them in the phonebook in Portland in a couple of years, they used to charge about $30-50 a wheel...I have a set of 14x5.5 rallyes that I eventually will have changed to some 16x6 ot 7's for the FDX duster... (Sure beat stocktons' prices...but you have to have some rims to do it first...). -D.Idiot

Willamette Wheel has been closed for a few years now. http://www.willamettewheel.com/ is an alloy wheel refinishing operation. The only Portland area source I'm aware of is http://www.specialtywheelsltd.org/ I called and they are about 2 months out on widening steelies right now. Didn't ask for prices.
