I am in the process of transplanting a fresher 68' 225 slant into my 66' A100 to replace the tired and leaking 70's era 198 motor that the previous owner put in. I would like to improve the carburetor situation during the process since both motors currently have leaky Carter BBD carbs and I'm tired of smelling gas in the van. My question is, what is the best option for a carburetor on a stock motor for drivability and gas mileage. I would love to do fuel injection, but that is beyond the scope of my current project. Do I rebuild the Carter BBD? (I've rebuilt it before with unimpressive results, I think I would take to a local carb shop this time) Is the Holley 1920 a better carburetor? The Holley 1920 appears to have been the orginal carb for a 66' A100 225. I tend toward original, but am not hung up on it. I have also looked at the Daytona Parts Universal replacement Carb. http://daytonaparts.com/universal-repla ... retor.html
Anybody have any experience with this carb on slants?

Should I;
A - Have the Carter BBD rebuilt
B - Find a rebuilt Holley 1920
C - Buy the Daytona Parts universal? ($300)
D - Something Else???

Thanks for your Thoughts

(1) What air cleaner are you running?
(2)do you have the PCV and crankcase breathers installed and functioning?
(3) do you have a charcoal cannister system installed to go with the BBD?
(4) have you done any other modifications to the motor besides adding the two barrel carb?

For a totally stock motor in a van, especially an A series van, I suggest you try and get a Holley 1920 Economaster carb. The economaster offers the best possibility for fuel economy in the simplest package- the one barrel carb. In a van (especially an A series) I also favor a one barrel carb due to clearance issues with the air cleaner and the doghouse. Chances are you will never find a factory van specific two barrel intake, and in a van a closed element air cleaner is really what you want to be running.

A closed element air cleaner, PCV system, crankcase breather system, and charcoal cannister system will help with the fuel smell in the van. Rigging upo a cold air intake system will help with fuel economy and performance.

If you have done other modifications tot he motor, you may be better off with a two barrel carb. But a stock 1968 225 will work best in a van with a single barrel carb.

Reed, Thanks for the suggestions. First, I think I meant to say Carter BBS not BBD? I'm talking single barrel carbs. BBD=Ball & Ball Double? vs BBS=Ball & Ball Single??. I am running a stock engine with a paper element air cleaner with no breather hose. The PVC is functional, hose to base of carb. The crankcase breather is just vented to the atmosphere via hose pointing down. No Charcoal canister. Hope this clarifies.

Ah, yes. BBD is a two barrel carb, and you are right about the BBD meaning ball and ball double.

I would hook the crankcase breather up correctly to the air cleaner and run a Holley 1920 Economaster. I would also rig up a cold air snorkel and a charcoal cannister system if the carb you end up using has the provisions for one.
