How come all of the slant sixes didn't come with an oil slinger on the crankshaft pulley? I am about replace the timing chain on my Duster, and if it doesn't have one, should I add one? It is the same one as a big block isn't it? They stopped putting them on slants about 71-72 didn't they? |

This is just a guess, on my part, and I don't know what year the changes took place. The early engines had a chamfer on the edge of the #1 main bearing shell, to spray oil on the timing gear/chain. The oil slinger is to prevent "flooding" of the front seal. It is possible in the later years, when the bearing chamfer was deleted, there was no longer a need for the slinger. Myself, I file a chamfer on the bearing, and use a slinger, on my engines. |

I think some did not get them just because the guy on the line forgot it. I like to run one. It is cheap insurance against a seal leak. |
