Its getting close to time to replace the original clutch in my 63 Dart 170 with a 170 3spd combo. I called around and found that most places list a 9 1/4 or 10 inch clutch with the 10 incher being cheaper and in stock.
My question is whether or not the 10 inch will fit my stock bellhousing and whether or not there is an advantage/disadvantage to either one.
Also, while I may bracket race this car,it will never be a high horspower machine, this is my mileage, daily driver, haul the kids vehicle.
As always any help is appreciated.

Thanks
HyperValiant

go with the 9.25 clutch. it has less wieght which means faster shifting. there is less mass for the synchro to slow down. i have the 10" clutch and while its ok downshifting almost requires a double clutch. you can feel the resistance as you hit the synchro and wait for it to speed up the disc. www.specclutch.com has a 9.25 model that is good for 400 lbs of torque and is a direct replacement. you have to call them for it. it's not listed on the site.

any model number for the specclutch? no wonder why they didn't answered my emails... I need one good 9.25 since the 10" also increases side stress and vibrations... and my mill is hopped up but I'm preparing a 240 plus inches slant with lots of headwork, erson 270 cam, etc.... I'll be around 350 lbs/ft torque and 250 plus horses.

thanks!

I thought the 10" truck clutch was the hot tip for a performance upgrade in the 833.

It is. I had a 10" clutch and a 3 speed in my '66 when I bought it. It shifted fine.

actually the hot tip for a performance upgrade would be a multidisc 7.25 setup... IMHO 10" are for V8... I have had 833's with 10", 9.25" and 9.125" clutch assemblies and the best I've ever tried was a 9.25 diaphragm pressure plate sintered disc... shifted and downshifted fine, with no gear noise when shifting hard and fast, and excellent power transmission with minimum slippage. All the slants with 10" clutch assys I ever drove where a vibration nightmare when clutch's hot.

Thanks for the advice guys but I really only need a good replacement clutch, with the 3 on the tree I wont be doing much speed shifting.

For a basic use, I would stick with the 9.25" clutch. I'm not sure the 10" clutch will fit inside your old small 3spd bellhousing anyway - that's based on my eyeballing it a while back.

I believe on the early bellhousing, and maybe all of them, that the bolts heads are too tall and will interfere with the bellhousing. Low profile head bolts are required.

I have 10" Clutches in Both of my cars - No problems upshifting or down shifting.

The 10" is better suited for Holding power if you are buying a stock type clutch and Plate from the parts Store.

I am not sure if the 10" will fit in the 3 Speed housing Either - I tossed My small Bell a while Back - I did Run a three speed for a while but it was with the 75-up Big alum. Bell that will accecpt 3 or 4 speeds.

STAY AWAY FROM ANY MOPAR / BORG&BECK CLUTCH/PRESS. PLATE FOR ANY HIGH PERFOMANCE USE.

I use a 9.25 clutch with the lightduty 5 speed in my Valaint. A larger clutch wont fit in my 3 spd bell. I use a Turbo Coupe T Bird disc with the stock Valiant pressure plate. In a light car with low gearing it is fine.

My moder prolly makes 200hp now and I can feel Im at about the limit of the clutch at WOT in 2nd gear....its that close to slipping.

The biggest threat to my clutch is my sons GF. She could wreck a funny car clutch parallel parking........

Unless you make more horses or become more abusive than I am the 9.25 should be fine.
