I just got my car back from having the engine rebuilt, and while he had the car, he noticed that the tranny was leaking. I had never seen this before, and I thought that driving it would help all of the seals to swell up and then the leaking would stop. I was putting new motor mounts in earlier this week and didn't notice any puddles under my car. I took my car in yesterday to get the rear u-joint replaced, and noticed a fairly large puddle of tranny fluid, and they seem to think it's coming out of the kickdown lever. (if that's the only place. . .)

Could I have ruined the seal when I took the original lever off for a super six lever? And would this be an expensive fix?

Also, the pinion seal is leaking on the diff., and there seems to be an intermittent howl or a scraping noise from the rear end, which gets louder and faster as I speed up. Hopefully some of you may have had similar experiences with your Mopars. I thought oil was just splashing back from the leaking rear seal, so I didn't think a lot of it. Now I'm thinking a lot of it.

I know you can't hear what I hear the sound, but based on what I've described, am I in for more than a leaky seal (like will new gears be in my future?)

It seems kind of funny though - the more I get fixed, the more that ends up being broken.

Is this a pre-66 transmission (I assume its a '63 by your name). If so, then I've never actually fiddled with one but it probably *is* the kickdown lever seal. You probably didn't damage it, they just are prone to leak with age.

For the '66 and later transmissions, it could also be the gear selector seal. NAPA part numbers for both seals for the '66 up are:

A/Trans Seal, Manual Control Lever Shaft (Metal Clad)
ATP14582
$1.69

A/Trans Seal, Throttle Lever Shaft (aka kickdown lever seal)
ATP13308
$0.99

Don't have part numbers for a pre-66, though. It may be the same- Chrysler was notorious for re-using designs over and over.

Yes, this is a 63 tranny. I am actually having it worked on as I type. It is actually leaking from several spots. I am also having the pinion seal replaced (leaks too), and one of the rear bearings is shot. Pretty soon, my car will be basically brand-new mechanically.
