maybe you guys can help me out since you have in the past... i need a transmission for my 1967 dart. i saw a guy online that has a 904 automatic tranny for sale. i think this transmission will fit my car. my car has a 225 slant six, and that transmission came of a '73 Satellite with a 318... both of the cars are 3 speed. maybe you guys can tell me if it will fit or give me advise. thanx. |

No. The bellhousing is different for a V8. You might be able to use some of the innards to beef up your transmission, though. |

Why not just have your 904 rebuilt? A junkyard or other used tranny for sale may be worse than yours... |

I have both a small block A-904 and a Slant Six A-904. The external difference is the bellhousing. The SB starter is on the driver's side about even with the input shaft. The Slant Six starter is on the upper side of the driver's side bellhousing. Internally, the SB has more clutches, I can't say whether the clutch drums are same size. bwhitejr |

V-8 trans should also have 4 pinion steel planetaries instead of 3 pinion aluminum. I run all the V-8 stuff in mine and have never broken anything.............................yet. ![]() |

SEE, I TRIED TO GET IT REBUILT BUT IT'S JUST TOO MESSED UP.. I WAS TOLD THAT THE PREVIOUS OWNER DIDNT SERVICE IT.. AND IT HAS ALL THIS METAL IN THE FUILD, MY MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT I WAS BETTER(CHEAPER) OFF BUYING A USED ONE OR REBUILT... THE TRANSMISSION I HAVE NOW, LEAKS A LOT OF FLUID AND TAKE A LONG TIME TO SHIFT... SO WHAT IS IT THAT I HAVE, A A-904 OR 904 TRANNY. IM THINKING OF BUYING A USED ONE AND REBUILDING THE ONE I HAVE LATER... GOOD IDEA? |

My SB A-904 had 4 gear aluminum planetaries. ![]() I am in the final throws of rebuilding my SB A-904. I had never been that close to an automatic transmission before now. It was a little intimidating at first, but after you get into it, you are just awed by the design of such a thing ( some genius somewhere is smiling). Be sure and get a good manual for your year model trans. (Check the pan rail for number and decode them). The manual I got (ATSG) only had the planetary set-up for a '72 and up wide-range, not the '69 standard planetaries I have. Not to mention that the Mopar Performance Rebuild Kit is for 72 and up transmissions (it doesn't state a year that the kit is for). The piston seals for front and rear clutches weren't right. So, rebuild it yourself. It is an enlightening experience. But start with a good case. There are plenty of places to buy all the parts you will need. Try http://www.AandAtrans.com for parts and knowledgeable staff. bwhitejr |

The transmission that will fit your application comes from a 1966-1967 Dart, Valiant or Barracuda with slant-6 engine. This is the only transmission that will fit your application. Transmissions from earlier or later years, transmissions from cars with V8 engines, and transmissions from larger cars will not fit or work. You can do a search on www.car-part.com for a working used (or rebuildable used) transmission for your application. It is highly unlikely that your transmission is "too messed up" to rebuild, by the way. |

The first year for the wide-range steel planetaries was 1980 or '81. All the prior-year Torqueflites had the standard-ratio aluminum units.

Not without extensive parts swapping effectively necessitating a usable core '66-'67 transmission, or swapping in a '68 or later crankshaft or complete engine assembly. Why do you need to work around it? You've got all the information, including the source, to find the transmission you need. |

Hummm. I ve got a 64 engine/trans that was pulled from a 68 dart. Are you saying that I can't just swap out my 67 trans (keeping the 67 engine)? Whats different? (externaly) |

Not if it's an automatic, you don't! ![]() Quote: Are you saying that I can't just swap out my 67 trans (keeping the 67 engine)?
'60-'67 crankshaft rear flange counterbore and matching torque converter "nose" is smaller in diameter than '68-up counterbore and torque converter. Small-nose and large-nose torque converters cannot be swapped without much additional transmission parts replacement (torque converter, input shaft, front pump parts). '68-up large-counterbore engine can be installed in front of '67-down small-nose automatic trans if you use the available 1/8" annular adaptor ring. '67-down small-counterbore engine cannot be installed in front of '68-up large-nose automatic trans unless you machine-out the crank rear flange counterbore, or swap in a '68-up crankshaft.

Your right I am wrong. 2538337Y 2017190 (trans is early 66) I thought the engine and trans were a set. |
