Post subject:  No Park ? 904 any Idea's

Hello,
I'm in a spot of trouble with my Auto . No Park ????
I thought the cable was broken or it had come off inside the Housing at the back of the Transmission. But after taking the park brake lever cover off for inspection . I found that there's nothing wrong with he the cable.

I put my hand inside the unit & did the job of the cable by pulling the Park lever at the rear of the transmission .
Nothing happened ?? no park gear ?

Hmmmmmm ??? Transmissions don't do a lot for me & I try to keep away from them.
I thought maybe this is a common problem & someone may be able to point me in the right direction of where the problem may be ???? it's a 1965 slant , valiant ,Colum auto / 904

If you have come across this problem I would appreciate the Advice please.
Thanks Peter

most likely your cable is toast inside the steering column -- on your 65 car-- it is a 1 year only affair-- imperial services -- i think can help you

The Cable is all moving ok , but park is not engaging.
I took the cover off the Cable end on the back of the transmission & got a mate to wobble the gear lever & the cable is all working.

If the problem was in the steering Column, Would'nt I be able to put it in park by hand , When I put my hand inside the lever housing on the back of the Trasmission? Because I tried to manual select it with the Pawl arm , but still not engaging??
Thank you for your help , Peter

It is a one-year-only deal, but there are no cables inside the steering column in the '65 setup. The detent plate and cable pullers are in a rubber-covered housing at the base of the column, on the engine side of the firewall.

It's possible the parking pawl itself is broken, or the cable puller arrangement up at the base of the column, under the rubber boot, is out of adjustment. Do you have the factory service manual? The adjustments are not very difficult to get right, but are very easy to get wrong; they really have to be done according to FSM procedure. See this thread if you haven't yet got the book.

Thank you for your help.
I have to work over the next couple of days so I will have to continue working on it later in the week.

I'll check out the manual a bit more too.
thank you all / Peter
