Hello all, just finished and installed and Started the new rebuild 225 into the 63 valiant. After I got the timing/idle just right and the valves adjusted I wanted to take it around the block, at least down the alley....BUT the trani did not engage, it did NOTHING. When the motor was being pulled out I drained the converter in case it slipped off. Why? you ask.....well, I had the car in my front room. since I had to get it out of the street. lived in a work shop for a while....being single is great. So I added fluid into the trani fluid check spout and still nothing......will I have to take the starter off, spin the converter until the drain plug is accessable and fill it that way. or is the trani just junk....... I did rescue the car from a TWEEKER.... and it would make sense that the car's trani is crap also....but for 248$ on ebay what do you want.... rubberbisquet? |

Did you get the converter fully enguaged into the pump snout? |

the converter never ended up coming off the trani, it stayed in place |

Where is the fluid level on the dipstick? Is it at least showing something? Did you drop the trans pan and see if the filter is plugged up and/or the pan full of trash? Also is the shift cable moving the shift lever inside the trans, you can see this with the pan off. |

I dropped the pan and not much fluid came out, maybe a quart. Checked the holes, and changed the filter, checked the shift lever, and that works. there wasn't any garbage or shaving to speed of in the pan. added fluid and blamo, it drives. Thank you.

FYI The torque convertor is filled from the pump not the drain hole. The reason it would do nothing is that waht ever fluid was left in the tranny was pumped into the convertor when you started it. Thast why ading more fluid fixed the problem. |

Careful-careful-careful: What filter did you install? There are a few different ones that will physically fit, but on a pre-'66 transmission, you have to have the kind that has two fluid ports in it. The '66-up filters have only one, and if you use them on a '65 or earlier transmission, you'll starve the rear pump and damage it; it'll get noisy. The '63 transmission originally would've had a metal screen rather than a dacron filter on the bottom of the valve body, and there was a canister-type fluid filter in one of the trans fluid cooler pipes, clipped to the side of the block at about the level of the oil pan rail, near the starter. |

there was only one filter, with only one hole/fluid port in it. It was the dacron type. "and there was a canister-type fluid filter in one of the trans fluid cooler pipes, clipped to the side of the block at about the level of the oil pan rail, near the starter." is this something I can install my self? Sounds like an oil filter type setup? . I will order the new interior pan casket from NAPA and make sure it is the dual fluid port one. Thanks for the insight. also looking for a GOOD/Honest Mopar mechanic in the L.A. area. any help would be great. Its been a long time since I fine tuned the points and carb. would like some help. just to let you know. I haven't driven her yet, but she did shift into gears; reverse, drive. That was a relief. |
