I started up the slant today. Just long enough to get it warmed up so I could adjust the valves. There is still lots to do but at least it runs. I should have it on the road next week and I will probably bring it to the Slant Six Meet on sunday. Intercooler is next.

Beautiful set-up! I WANT IT!

Can you remind us of the specs/details? Thanks!

Rob, do you have a blow of valve, on there?

Nice work Rob!

The turbo setup isn't done yet... no blow off valve, intercooler, the list goes on.

The head has peen fully ported and polished w/SI oversized valves. The bottom end is stock. I have a electronic disttributor w/ an HEI module and a MSD coil. The turbo is a Turbonetics T3/T4 .63 turbine with a stage 3 wheel and a 50 trim compressor. I am using a Clifford manifold and Holley 450 carb.

I have another clifford manifold converted to fuel injection and a megasquirt for the f.i. upgrade. Still need to make a crank trigger for the f.i.

Rob, I would suggest a BOV, before taking it for a boosted ride. You don't want to create a pressure spike, when the throttle slams shut. The other items can wait, but not the BOV

I fully agree. From having owned several turbo cars myself I wouldn't even rev one withouth a blow off valve on it. Make sure to also set your bov low and increase it slowly, otherwise all that work can be gone in a heartbeat.

I have a BOV on order. It will be a while before I turn up the boost. I still have to make some modifications to the carb and install my wide band O2 sensor....still lots to do...today was the just the first tine it has been started in a few months. I was a little excited... the tape over the nitrous injectors has to go HA HA and I have put some clamps on the intake piping. I hava also replaced a plastic T with a brass piece.

Thanks, Its taken some time to get this far. I am not thrilled about the carb but I will use it until I get an intercooler and a few other items done, then its on to electronic fuel injection.

Rob64GT - Nice build rob and a good choice on your turbo, just wandering what A/R the exhaust housing is?

As far as a BOV IMO I dont think its that bad to not have one if you are not turning it up real bad. If it is a Auto trans I dont see way you couldnt run it at low boost until you get your BOV. I mean there was production cars sold without BOV and they didnt explode over a little abuss. Although it does make it better for the turbo but the real reason the BOV was even brought about was to help Stright Drive cars keep the spool up inbetween shifts. But it is better to have one & keeps a load off of it when shuting down hard and can extend the bearing/bushing life of the turbo. Compressor Surge can be more dangerous to the turbo than no BOV & is something you should watch out for on your combo because of the size of the turbo & engine. Although the 50trim turbo should be OK because it is a great little tubo with a good Compressore map if you didnt go to small on the A/R for the exhaust.

The main thing is with a turbo car is to take small steps in tuning & performance gains so that you can ease up on any possible problems as you go. Start small & work you way up & dont take the A/F for granit, get something to monitor it like a wideband or tune on a dyno.

Great build thought for sure.

The A/R on the exhaust is .63 and it has a stage 3 wheel. Hopefully the boost won't come on too low, although I don't plan revving it past 5200 RPM. If I had been using a external wastegate I would have used a different turbo, also knowing what I know now I would have done things a little different. I would probably keep the 50 trim compressor but on the exhaust side I would have gone with a custom housing that was in the configuration of the turbo on the 2.2 dodge, but with a .63 A/R and a stage 5 wheel. The elbow/Swing valve/wastegate on the 2.2 turbo is a much better fit by the starter. See the picture, the corner of the down pipe is about 1/2" away from the corner of the starter. Also the 2.2 swingvalve can be modded to accept a 3" downpipe and with the standard swingvalve a 2 1/2" is it. There are other swingvalves that use a 3" Vband but there isn't enough room past the starter. I am really hoping that a .63 A/R exhaust and the stage 3 don't spin up too soon. There is a stage 5 wheel but that is about the largest housing/wheel with an internal wastegate.

An external wastegate is the way to go but there isnt a lot of room for one and my budget didnt want to pay to make the room! This project has beem a totel budget job. Complete with freebe parts!

Nice buildup! Do you have a good source for those hoses? I really need some better intake plumbing for my turbo setup.

Turbohoses.com is where I got mine, and they look just like his except red. My understanding is that the BOV is to keep the turbo spinning when the throttle body closes suddenly as in gear shift time with a manual tranny, so it does not have to spool up again. It can be a major restriction, so it you are running an auto, I really don;t see the serious need for it.

I got my hoses from a person on ebay...There fine but nothing special. I like turbohoses.com I will probabily order some hoses and t-clamps from them when I do my intercooler upgrade.
I will be doing an air to water intercooler, not much roon for an air to air intercooler on a 66 Valiant, I also like the idea of ice in the water tank when at the drag races.
