A friend of mine is moving out of state and his wife had a low mileage 91 Taurus that fried the transmission(I now know what "geartrain meltdown" is) a couple weeks ago. He gave it to us as he didn't want to fool with it. Well, my wife got it fixed and abandoned the old faithful 65 Cuda! I don't know what I am going to do with the Cuda now. I bought that car in 1985. I drive a pickup. Hate to just let it sit. Might have to sell it! |

Better hang on to the Cuda, for when the Taurus, dies again. |

ford taurus is the bane of my mechanical existance. better not be the 3.8L have fun getting the water pump out after it locks up and fries your belt drive. actually I hate that 3.8L motor in general. hope your timing cover doesn't leak. (that might be a RWD specific problem, mustang ect.) |

Ditto. My faily owned an 86 Sable (same as a Taurus) and like clockwork it broke down and was in the shop every weekend. Hands down the crappiest car we ever owned. Part out the Taurus or sell it and keep the cuda. |

So if you own a Taurus you don't need just a spare tire, but a spare car? It has the 3.8L engine and I know they have a head gasket problem. Maybe I need to get a hitch and a towbar for the Cuda and just drag it along behind. |

don't know much about the '91 Taurus, but the '95 ish ones seem to have trans problems regularly. |

The problems are primarily with the AXOD transmission. The fix is known. |

...and the 3.0 litre V6. When I worked at the wrecking yard, whenever anyone would call and say "Hi, I have a (year) Taurus" or "Hi, I have a (year) Sable", all of us countermen would immediately say "Sorry, we don't have a good 3-litre or a good transmission for you." In more than nine out of ten cases, the answer would be "Oh. OK, thanks. *click*". Pure, utter garbage, both the engine and the transmission (not to mention the electrical system, the lighting system, the air conditioning, and pretty much the entire rest of those sorry excuses for cars.)Quote: The fix is known.
Yeah, haul it to the scrapyard and save yourself whatever hair you have left.

If their present offerings are like the Taurus/Sable, no wonder Ford is cutting all those blue/white collar jobs and closing plants. |

I've kind of gone over to the dark side myself, but at least my front drive sedan says Dodge Intrepid on the side. When I took the Duster parts car (thanks for the brakes!) to the shredder I saw a mid 1990s Taurus that looked quite good about to meet the same fate. |

my inlaws have tryed to give me 3 of those on diffrent occasions. I refused them all. the only way to "fix" anything on a taurus is to have it crushed, then crush it some more just to be sure, then have the crushed chunk shredded just to make sure it is dead. I dont know about you, but if my wife spent money on anything to do with a taurus ( much less getting out of a 65 cuda for one ) it would be grounds for divorce. good luck tophat |
