I was installing a new (actually used from the junk yard) gauge cluster limiter into the back of my instrument panel (73 Swinger). When I pulled the old voltage limter out, a wire came loose (or was already loose). It is the black wire hooked to some kind of transistor or something (I'm not very knowledgeable about electronics). It has a tab on the end of the wire like it goes into some slot. Anybody know where this hooks up or what its function is?

The slots you see at the top of the photo are the slots the limiter came out of. The picture doesn't show the far left slot that the ground post of the limiter was in.

I guess I don't know how to post pictures yet. Here is a link to the pictures, sorry

no big deal man, that's the condenser. You should insert the male terminal on the end of the condenser cable along with the 12v input on the limiter (most likely it would be the closest tab near that cable...)

I got the wrecking yard limiter in and have driven the car around a few times. Gas gauge seemed the same (not working) the first time I drove it. The next couple of times I drove the car, the gauge was actually accurate, but was slow to register. I thought it was fixed. Today, the gas gauge doesn't seem to be working again.

So, I bought one of those 7508 mini voltage regulators, and I am going to put it in my old limiter (as you described in an older post) and see if I get more consistent readings.

Before I start prying the cover off the old limiter, is that backing fragile? Or can you just put a screwdriver on it to pry the cover off. Thanks!

is kinda fragile but's supported by the steel cover so it's safe to GENTLY pry it off with a flat small screwdriver. To be on the safe side, pull it up untill you can slide a small plier under the steel lip and straighten it up w/o putting all the force on the 30-40 YO phenolic board
