I did a search for gas mileage and got so much stuff (all of it non-pertinent) I decided to just ask. I drive delivery and am using my fiances Protege and racking up miles on her poor car. I'm not happy about that, and well, neither is she. Her car gets 24 mpg, is this atainable to achieve in my Valiant? I it is I will gladly get back into my car and drive it at work. Right now I'm not certain what the mileage I'm getting is, but I do know that it is not good. I will fill up the car tonight and have her record the mileage she gets off the tank so that I can know how poorly I'm getting curently. It is a pushbutton auto wit a 904 if I'm not mistaken.

And before it's mentioned, I don't want nor have room for another car. Much less the money to throw down.

24mpg city would be a considerable feat. 16-18 is certainly possible, and 20 is not out of the question, depending on your driving habits. I would seriously doubt anyone has gotten 24mpg city under normal driving conditions/traffic....

Most Slant A-bodies likely get in the 13-16 mpg city range if they are in good tune and not hammered on.

24mpg hwy is quite doable.

Lou

I'd say NO unless your floorpans are very rotten and you use flinstsonte's car propulsion system alternated with gas

I'd certainly can see a very conservatively driven valiant, carrying small jack, partial size spare, small 14 x 5.5 mags, manual transmission, 3.23 rear end, a good GOOD tuned economaster 1920 with small accel pump, and stiff economizer, recurved dist, get 18 mpg, I'll agree with Lou, maybe 20 ain't out of the question... But 24 mpg is a mileage that I don't get in highway driving due to hammering...

 Hell, I used to get 20 city with my '66 with a 390 Holley and 3.55 gears.

You gotta find the right combination, but 24 may still be just out of reach.

IF you need a car with good mileage for work I'd sell the Valiant and get a more economical car, or get a different job. :D

sometimes high (numerically) geared cars gets better mileage in city driving than regular gear ratios...

I had a '70 Duster that I got up to 44.7 highway. I rebuilt the engine with a ported head milled 0.055" and a Comp Cams 252M. It got converted to OD 4-speed, but kept the tall 2.76 gears. I played around with screens under the carburetor, which got me into the 29 mpg range, but then added something called a Power Plate. That sucker jacked the highway mileage to over 40 mpg! I'd say your Valiant should be good for the targeted 24 in town for under $100 in stuff.

For ideas you can go to :
www.FuelEconomyTips.com
and:
www.mpgResearch.com

There is a guy there getting consistent 60+ mpg with a '97 Saturn.

The '74 Dart I drove from 1984 to 1990 (4 door, 3 sp. Manual, 198/6) got 18 in town. Drove it about 40,000 miles over those years. The mileage was only a little better on the highway. I don't drive my current '65 Valiant (Auto, 225/6) enough to get a good fix on the mileage.
