Hey everyone,

This is my first post on this forum. I regularly post on the Australian Mopar Market site. I thought i would expand my connections and hopefully get some useful tips about everything slanted. Im 21 and live in Sydney and own a 1966 Valiant VC regal with a 225 slant, extractors and just the factory single barrell carb. Its pretty much stock as.

I will soon be attempting the HEI conversion... using a Bosch HEC715 coil, and the Bosch BIMO24 ignition module. Is there much i need to watch out for when converting to this system. Im getting a 5mm or so thick aluminium plate made up to ground the module to the body.

Other than that do i need anything else.... besides the obvious wiring.

Don't forget the electronic dizzy. You will most likely need to spend some time re-curving the dizzy to match your car, but that is technical easy, but time consuming. I love the rims on your valiant! Those are a pretty rare variety of slotted mags. Beauty!

Yeah i was thinking of either getting an auto electrician to convert the points dizzy or buy one from someone in the states. I think i may have clearance issues if i did the latter?

Im pretty sure that the rims may be a factory option for a later VG model Valiant. (it has VG stamped on the back) not tottally sure though.

I added these caps to them the other day, i think it finishes them off great.

I known those rims were available only in the aftermakret in the States, and I have never seen one on a street car. I don't think your dizzy is any different that one from the States. If you can't do a diorect swap, you may be able to get one from the States and then just change the internals.

I always had sympathy for you slanters down under. I can't imagine having to work on a slant with EVERYTHING "under the slant" so to speak. I would be sorely tempted to run an electric fuel pump, mount the coil on the inner fender, and get a alternator mount that put the alternator on the maniufold side of the block.

It's really not that bad for a slanter here, especially with the advent of eBay!

RHD wise, access is not too much of an issue either because of the relocation of the oil-filter to the LHS of the block.

Those jelly bean wheels are very cheap here - you can readily pick up a set of 4 for $100-150.

Changed my mind and think i may go the way of getting one of your US slant dizzy kits sent over this way. Seems easier installation and neater and a little more factoryish.

Don't buy the Mopar Performance voltage regulator. They are very poor quality. Many replacement regulators that you find are electronic anyway. It's easy to tell if a new regulator is electronic as they weigh about 1/3rd of a point type regulator. I converted my '66 Dart to electronic ignition without upgrading the voltage regulator and didn't have any problems.

If all you want is electronic ignition you have at least three ways to go. One is to keep your point distributor and install a conversion kit like the Pertronix Ignitor. Another is to drop in a factory electronic distributor and use it to trigger an HEI module. The 3rd method is to install the full factory electronic ignition system. Personally I would just use a factory electronic distributor and HEI module as it's more simple than the factory setup (no ballast resistor) and the HEI module is more sophisticated than the Mopar module.

What are the benefits of the HEI set up. Bigger fatter spark? Does this application suit all slant sixes or would it be overkill on my humble stock block?

For Aussie applications substitute all advice re GM modules and different coils with Bosch HEC715 coil, and the Bosch BIMO24, as per your first post.
