Hi. Not only am I new to the forum, I am very new and completely uninitiated when it comes to slant six engines. To start, I have two questions:

1. I bought a salvaged vehicle with an engine block date code of 7-30-81 and used in a truck-like application. The distributor is missing...I'll be going to the junkyard to get a replacement. I'd like some advice on whether every slant six I see will have an interchangeable distributor or whether only some will be interchangeable...or whether only 7-30-81 distributors will be interchangeable.

2. I assume this engine is a 225 cubic inch. Is there an easy way to confirm this?

Thanks for your assistance. Dave

Any slant after 1975 is a 225 (unless you get some kind of 170 or 198 crate motor...)...

All slant distributors should fit, but...

With the year slant you have you either have the Electronic Ignition (any distributor from 1973+) or you may have the Electronic Spark Computer (in which case the distributor has no springs, vaccuum advance or advance weights in the body....)

What's the engine going into/ what's in in now?

If it's a truck, try to get one from a truck as the advance will be more correct for a heavy vehicle...

I'll admit I was a bit vague in my original post as to the vehicle. It's an Aircraft Ground Support Equipment Tractor. Imagine you're at the airport looking at the low-slung boxy vehicles pushing aircraft equipment around or pulling a train of baggage carts away from an airliner...that's it. She weighs 6750 pounds and will pull 40,000.

Since my post I did find some reference material that confirms it's an H-225 with a single barrel carburetor AND a speed governor. The rear end has a 14.14 to 1 ratio.

The distributor is listed as "electronic", so I'm not quite sure which of the two you've described is the one. I like your suggestion, do you still feel the same after getting a bit more info?

I don't have your post in front of me, but basically you're saying any slant six distributor will work, all I have to do is distinguish between the two you note...right?

Thanks much. Dave

We're fixing a 'tug'!!!!!!

I don't think the 'tug' would be equipped with the ESC for 'mileage and good emissions'...

I'd grab an EI distributor from a 1973-1980 truck if junkyarding and give it a try, or get a 'remanf' from the parts store....

Personally, they put these engines in a lot of different applications....so it's not as bad as like the V-8 crowd trying to weigh the merits of restoring a 'Hemi powered' air raid siren, or rebuilding the engine and putting it in a street rod.

In this case if the slant is doing the job, then let's get it fixed so it can do it for another 40 years....

p.s. when you get it up and running, I'd get some Digi-pics and post it in the 'Slixers Gallery' for fun...

Great ideas!

I did a compression test not knowing what to expect and surprisingly got 145, 135, 150, 135, 135, 120. I'm very happy with that and expect the engine's got quite a bit of life left.

My wife's named it Popeye.

Thanks so much for your help. Dave

Hello all
I also have a Tug and I'm trying to find some info on the carb. Its a Carter 1bl . The tag is missing so I'm having trouble getting any help. It's leaking fuel bad where the arm for the accelerator pump comes out the top of the carb. anyone know about these older carter carbs?? I sure could use the help.

Thanks Dean

I am rebuilding the 225 out of my 1981 dodge ram with the lean burn ignition system. I am replacing the distributor with a vacuum type and have no use for the original. If you want it it yours, just pay the freight.

Dean,

If you have fuel coming out the top of the carb like that the needle and seat aren't closing or are leaking. You may need a new float. If you know the year the tug or engine was built you should be able to get a carb kit for a similar year pickup. Since most carb kits cover many years you have a good chance of getting what you need.

I would really love to see some burnout pics with these tugs. With a 14-1 rear axle ratio it should be no problem!

Will probably pop a wheelie too. Great photo opportunity.
