well I pulled my Steering Column out of my 66 dart last night and it looks like I need to rebuild it . the Steering shaft is real loose. I have the Rebuld kit for the steering coulper but I do not have black rubber seal that goes above that. My question is where is the best sourse to get bearring and seals ect for the column? I have never rebuilt a steering collumn but I figure that after 40 years it must need to be done . Thank you for you time |

You do know there is only one bearing in your column right? The lower end is supported by the steering box. Anyway, you can or at least could at one time buy the seal from Year One, but if it's like the seal I bought in 1993 it won't last long at all. |

I've rebuilt several newer columns for the TMC giveaway cars by using parts from donors, but have never done a '66. I imagine it is not too different. Remember not to overstress any nylon shear pins. There is a lot of interchangability between columns, and I've never found a bad bearing inside a column yet. However, the sliding coupler is often broken inside and sloppy. The seal that goes above the coupler joint was available from my local parts place, but was a real pain to install. It is flimsy and easily distorts and is neigh impossible to reinstall if you ever remove it. I probably spent as more time on that one silly seal than the rest of the column put together. I've seen a molded rubber piece that looks easy to install to replace it advertised in one of the Mopar mags, but I forget which and when. I would definitely try to find it before fighting with that factory seal again. Other than that, all the columns I've done by just followed the factory manual w/ no surprises. |

Hey 66Dart... please post your experiences when you are finished. I'd like to know how it worked out and probably there are many on this board who could benefit from your experiences. Thanks! -Mac |
