I'm picking up a \6 out of a '72 Dart to install into my '66 Plymouth Belvedere I.

Believe it or not, the \6 (of unknown origin, not original) in my Plymouth wanted its internal parts to see the light of day. Haven't ivestigated the cause of this occurance. Lack of oil was NOT the issue.

So, I'm getting a very nice running \6 from a '72 Dart donor. I've been told that I will need to swap oil pans because of a steering linkage issue on the Plymouth.

Are there any other slight differences and/or changes that I will need to make in order to successfully install this fine motor into my Plymouth? Any smog equipment on the '72? If so, can I remove it without effecting how it runs?

I plan on doing new belts, hoses, spark plugs, wires, coil, oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket, oil, oil filter, air filter and coolant. Anything I'm leaving out?

Also, is it cheaper to recore a radiator or buy new? Does new even exist?

This will be my first engine swap. I've got a friend helping me out that's done this before, but only on blue ovals and bowtie's.

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Can't wait to get my 40 yeal old daily driver back on the road!

The existing '72 pan and pickup will probably work in your '66 (the fitment problem is definitely there in an A-body, but there's a great deal more room under your B-body). So, either take careful measurements or if you want to be fully safe, use the oil pan and (cleaned) oil pickup pipe assembly from your '66, that is assuming the pan and pickup currently in your '66 are from your '66! Use the '66 engine mount brackets and cushions. If your '72 engine is from a California car, it will have very primitive full-time EGR that you will definitely want to remove and an air injection pump that will neither help nor hurt much of anything in your '66.

Use NGK ZFR5N spark plugs (stock number 3459) and remember, remove the metal ring washers from the plugs before installing the plugs in the engine; they're not used in this application. Use Magnecor wires. No need to replace the coil as a matter of course; if you want to upgrade the ignition system now wouldn't be a bad time. see HEI upgrade instructions, install a NAPA Echlin long-tip rotor # MO-3000 with Standard-Bluestreak CH-410X cap and open up the gaps on those ZFR5N plugs to 0.045".

If your '66 has an automatic transmission, you will need the 1/8" annular adaptor ring that centers the '67-down small-nose torque converter in the larger '68-up crankshaft counterbore. You can get the ring from Pat Blais, tflitepatty@verizon.net .

New junk from China exists, you have to look harder to find new decent-quality radiators for a '66. If your top and bottom tanks are in good shape, have yours re-cored. Best to use a high-efficiency core.

Excellent info Dan. Thanks

The \6 currently in my '66 is not original. The previous owner had a local garage install this motor. The only info they could give me was that they remembered it too came out of a Dart but could not recall what year.

I'll check to see if the new mill I'm buying is from a Cal. car.

As for the transmission. The '66 is an automatic. I'm also getting the transmission from the '72 Dart along with the motor. Would it be easier to swap it too instead of mating it with the tranny currently in the '66?

Ballpark cost on doing the HEI upgrade?

Thanks again for the info.
