Post subject:  How to build a 220HP Slant

Hey guys just wondering if anyone out there has built a tough slant or is in the process of doing so and what sort of thngs they have come across or decided to slap in it?

How do i get compression up towards 10:1?

What camshaft lift and duration would you suggest for 220 hp?

Cheers

Fairly easy to do 220hp, if you've built a performance engine before. If not, just do some reading on this site, there are several threads dealing with build ups.

1. solid bottem end, possibly deck block .090
2. nice cam (several choices) make sure you degree it on install (dual pattern cam is my preference, 230-235 duration @ .050)
3. head work: oversize valves, ported polished, decked .090
4. 4bbl carb, intake
5. good exhaust system (headers or Dutra dual manifolds)

just for reference, I have a .090 decked head and a .040 decked block, and have 10.5 to 1.

get your head cc'd before you cut anything.

what would be the standard head chamber volume on my 225 slant?

Will milling the block deck up to 0.090" will cause any problems other than requiring valve geometry to be checked.

And also where would i be buying these slant parts from? I cant see too much on the net.

Thropar is correct! I searched past threads looking for advice on cams, compression, valves, etc. I also got alot of good info from Slantzilla, Doctor Dodge and Dart270 . Jim Cox of Cox Brothers did all of the head work and machining on my slant. Jim said with the following I should have about 230-40 HP:

Milled head for a 10.5 : 1 CR
Port & polished head
installed 1.7 int. & 1.5 exh chevy valves
1.5:1 roller rockers
Edelbrock 500 cfm 4bbl.
Offy intake
6 into 1 header with 3 in. pipe
Isky cam 264 duration 228@.050
Bored .040 over
Dbl roller chain, hi vol. oil pump,
I also added a electronic distributer with a MSD 6AL ignition and blaster coil.

I did have some problems with push rod length due to the milling of the head. Jim cox acquired a new set of shorter push rods in order to make the rockers work correctly. I also had to get a 2500 rpm torque converter (Continental converters) to get some bottom grunt . Be sure to get the harened hub if you get a converter! Again, most of the people on this site recommended this. Rear gear is a 3.91.
I have not had the chance to dyno the car this year. But after all the mods, the car is a lot of fun and had great git up n go.

Again, your greatest resource is the search site and the guys on this site that are willing to help. Good luck!

Just wondering again if anyone could tell me the standard head chamber volume on my 225 slant?

No, we can't. They vary too much.

I would stay away from the high volume oil pump if I were you. Those put a lot strain on the already overworked oil pump gear. The stock oiling system is more than adequate for 220 H.P.

Very nice work Mike. Head work is essential. Those ports are nice!!!

If you would, please post some pics of the throat area after you cut the larger seats, maybe let us know when it's up on your site. (wordpress is a great way to content manage a site huh?)...cheers...

I always wait for 1/2 down before taking anything to the machine shop. I expect payment this week, which should have the head ready for more pics in about 3-4 weeks.

I found a way to improve flow by raising the roof and clearancing around the guides that also maintains good velocity. This sucker should scream. I opened the ports more than typical because it's going on a turbo application. Turbos like larger ports (for the valve size) and a higher exhaust:intake ratio.

your going to hear mixed responses on the hi-po oil pump set up. I am on the fence on that one, since I have a much more built up engine.

hardened gears "might" still be able to be obtained from doctor dodge on this message board. its where I got mine from, and slantzilla has had his for various nitrous passes at the track without any trouble. You might want to ask them about it.

Hello,
MPG MIKE -

Nice work there - Where Is IckesBurg Pa?

I am guessing somewhere in central PA Judging by the 717 Number?

I had taken my haed out to Racekrafters in Lancaster to get My serious work done to it.

I only have 1.44 / 1.70 Valves int it - Probably could go Bigger sometime down the road.

I am In IRWIN - Just outside of Pittsburgh, Off the Pa Turnpike.

Greg
