Post subject:  1945 rebuild kit : Part # needed

Hello everyone, I'm searching for a carb rebuild kit I could order on the web (I'm the other side of the pond) => I can't go to Napa or anything you always talk about! :)
I searched on Rockauto but couldn't find anything.
Thanks for your help

Marc

Why are you looking for a kit for a 1945? The first year for the 1945 was 1974, and your car is considerably older than that.

Right Dan, good memory!
The 1945 is the only acceptable carb I have left out of the three I have.
1920 & BBS are the others, the BBS has the mixture adjusting screw really stuck in and the 1920... Well anyway everybody says the 1945 is better.

Mmm... some people that says some kind of stuff.
Well I thought I read it several times on this board, maybe I just dreamt.
Then is the 1920 better than the 1945?

If you are trying to choose between a 1920 in good condition and a 1945 in good condition, on an early car, the 1920 is the better carburetor.

Obviously if the 1945's in good condition and the 1920's in poor condition, then the 1945 is the better choice!

Allright, I think I'm gonna rebuild both given the price of a rebuild kit.
Any Part #?
And what makes the 1920 a better carb "on an early car"? What difference is there? Slants are more or less all the same, intakewise?

Oh and I've got what looks like a Carter 1bl. It looks like the schemes but doesn't have anything (except one or two figures here and there) writen on it. If anyone has a part # maybe I'm gonna finish my huge carb rebuilding campain with this one.

Thanks

Marc

Post subject:  Design and purpose...

With the Holley 1920, it's a simpler design with not a lot of smog ports to plug up for use on early cars, the Holley 1945 if it works, will work well...but you have lots of ports to plug...and the design allows for the thing to develop an air leak the way the body bolts together (vs. the unitary body of the 1920....)

Sadly all carbs if they've sat and gunked up for a while or been exposed to the elements unused, become a crap shoot after soaking in "the dip" and rebuilding...

You can cross reference the following parts kits to find the proper Echlin or preferred brand kit:

Borg-Warner 10392A for the 1966-1973 Holley 1920
10433 for the 1974-1980-ish Holley 1945

Marc, what year car do you have and what is your engine configuration? Before you rebuild your 1945, I can change some of the carb calibrations. Send me a PM.

Mitch
